I am thinking of building one of these to trim some trees. What size chain do you think I should use?

5/16 Gr 80.

You probably won't see that in the USA..unless it's someone stealing cable.

5/16 chain should be fine. 3/8 is bigger but i don't think necessary. i use 5/16 on my 3ph winch and it is a 7000 lb winch. interesting setup for a bucket lift.

It's interesting that they triple the chain on each side, while apparently leaving nothing but some sheet metal at the edge of the barrel to hold all the weight.

I would use a plastic container and hemp rope. But make sure you use a hard hat in case you fall it will protect you. Bozeman bucket brigade !

Depending on how pressed one is for time, could grow the hemp in the bucket..........then make the rope:thumbsup:

Just watch out for heat seeking helicopters:laughing::laughing:

I would use a plastic garbage can that has molded handles and Yellow Plastic Safety chain that would be OK because it's "Safety Chain" . . .John

As stated 5/16 grade 80 would be more than enough as the weak point is going to be the sheet metal of the 55 gal drum. That would likely fail way before you broke the chain.
