I have recently purchased a "new to me" tractor. Its bigger than my 8n, and is running a little rough. Sounds like it is skipping. It is a Ford gas 4 cylynder with oil bath air filter. Has a pump on the front to run a FEL. I need to know what model it is so I can buy a tune up kit. Here are the particulars:

it has a 5 forward speed transmission with 1 reverse. set up as follows:

4 2 3
DOWN UP
5 1 R

On the transmission is the number/letters: NDA 4624 B
On the bell housing: 850 also has stamped <> 99124 <>
There is also the number on the block: 64D1
and the numbers/letters: EAF 6015J

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The tractor was in my price range, and if I can get her back to running properly, she will do all that I need to get done. Thanks in advance.

sounds like an 850. Does it have power steering? That sould be a good work tractor. The 8N has a 4speed and first gear is to high for any work requiring high RPMs.
A new dist cap and rotor will prolly get you goin.

Welcome to TBN, I agree, sounds like an 850.
A few others on here will be able to clarify those idenity numbers you have given.

Good Luck and be safe with your new tractor!!!

Yep.. it's an 850.. the 800 series was built between 1955 and 1957... that sn makes it a 1956 model

All the gas, 4 cyl, side mount distribuitors use the same points and condensor, and distribuitor cap.. all the way from later 8n thru 4cyl 4000.

Use metal core wires, and al437 spark plugs gapped to .025. pointsgap is also .025

fire order is 1-2-4-3

that engine is a 172ci red tiger.. makes just shy of 50hp

As you know, on the ford 5 speeds, up and forward is 3rd, up and back is rev

middle and forward is 2nd, and middle and back is 1st

down and forward is 4th, and down and back is 5th. thus you have 3 neutral positions.

3/r makes for a good pseudo-shuttle shift for doing loader work.

I have a ford 711 1-arm loader on my 850.

While PS was optionally available on the X00 series.. it was not common.. though aftermarket PS is available.

Do yourself a favor and get an I&T FO-20 service manual as well as an owners manual... PM me and i can tell you where to get a reprinted owners manual for super cheap.

That unit has 3 seperate oil sumps rear of the engine.. HYDS, TRANS, and DIFFY.

Diffy drain is a pipe plug, and has a level check on the left axle trumpet.. also a pipe plug.. fill up is a big 2" cap under the rear of the seat.. right 'cheek' side. Hyds has a bung drain, just forward of the diffy pipe plug drain, and the level check is by dipstick in a round cover, left side.. fill up is a also a large cap under the seat, left side.. kinda under your left thigh.. Trans drain is forward of the hyds drain.. also a bung.. level check is a pipe plug, right side of the trans, kinda by your right heel.. ( NOT A BOLT ).. fillup is ont he tranny cover.

UTF fluid meeting M2C134D spec will work in all sumps.. however I personally like 80w90 gear oil in the trans and diffy, and UTF fluid in the hyds.

You should enjoy your 850.. they are very strong tractors for their size.. twice an 8n, easilly.. and they have a heavier rear end than the N, NAA, and 6XX models.

Here's a pic of my 850 moving a round bale of hay on a 1-arm ford loader.

Thanks for all the input. Hopefully a tune up will take care of the skip. It does have power steering and a FEL. So far I really enjoy it. I was workingit last week when it developed the skip. I need to get the throttle friction fixed, which should be relatively easy. IT does have quite a bit of power, and I am looking forward to doing general maintenance around the farm and camp with it. I am not a farmer, but like to putter around the place. we have a farmer that leases the land from us, but there are plenty of projects to do (drainage ditches, post holes to be dug, brush piles to be moved, food plots to put in).

A skip? like a miss? Might be a valve... I'd run some MMo in the gas and oil for a bit and see what you get. ( plain atf fluid can work as well.. ).

Replace all plugs and wires.. cracked wires can arc to ground.. and carbon scoring inside the distrib cap can cause missfires too..

Soundguy, I bought a tractor supply master tune up kit for the 850. The applications said it fits 8n, NAA, 600-4000 (4 cyl). I started the tractor before I put the kit on. Kicked over no problem. I put on the point set, condenser, rotor, spark plugs and distributor cap. I then changed the plug wires. Tried to start it and nothing happened. Tried replacing the new parts with the originals, even down to the plug wires, and cont get it to fire. The only new parts I kept in place are the plugs. They are AL 216. Any thoughts?

The side mount 8n thru the 4000 4 cyl all take the same points, coil, rotor, cap and condensor... so your parts are good.

The al216 are equiv to champion h10.. I like the hotter h12 or al 437.. but the 216 will work fine.

Check fire order.. 1-2-4-3 1 is at the radiator..

Make sure you didn't loose the rotor clip .. ie.. there is a small metal clip that goes on the distrib shaft then the rotor slips over it.. it's as small as your pinkie fingernail and costs almost 10$ from the dealer, and without it the rotor is loose and sloppy.

ensure you have power to the coil, and that your points are gapped correctly at .025 ( plugs at .025 as well ).. and they they are opening and closing.

if you have a test lamp clip it to power then probe the outgoing wire from the coil to the side of the distribuitor... the small wire.. not the wire to the cap. It should show lamp out when points open.. and lamp on when points closed. if the lamp is out the entire time the points are not closing.. if lamp on the entire time. the points are closed/not opening.. or the wire that feeds thru the side of the distrib insulator bushing has chaffed and is shorted out.

your plug wires should be metal core.. not carbon core ideally.. though the carbon work.. they are a resistor and can be a problem when the system, gets some wear on it.

post back.

All right, I printed out all of these posts, posts from other forums, and posts from my google search "how to tune up a tractor". went back out to try it again. Before I did the intial tune up attempt, i put Marvel Mystery oil in the tank like you suggested soundguy. On my way back to the farm, I saw my neighbor in his driveway. He is a 'part time' mechanic and knows my tractors and knows the sound the 850 was making. I told him what i did and that i was not getting any spark. He said "make sure it is gapped correctly" I responded 'I got the .025 feeler guage, gapped it between the flat part and the bar that opens the gap on the points and . . . " before I could say anything else, he says "You knucklehead, you gap it between the pionits, when the points are open on the high poiint, not between the low point and the striker plate". Me "oh, I'll try that". Get back out there, gap it the way he saiud (In hindsight, it makes much more sense) try to turn it over, and she is trying, but just wont fire. I know the plugs are probably wet from tryingt o start her the day before, so I put the original plugs back in. The ones I replaced were wet. Try it again, and she is trying to fire, but just wont get going. I crank the engin and look at the distributor cap. It is wiggling with each revlolution. Get down, readjust the distributor cap, climb back on board, and she fires right up. YAHOOO, back to where I started. Throttle her up and put her in gear, bogs down and almost stalls. Same problem as before. Decide to try Soundguys MMO solution and let it run for a while. Get on the 8N and do some brush hogging. After about 1/2 hour, put the 8n away. As soon as I turn the 8n off, i can hear htat the 850 is runnig smoother. Climb aboard, put her in gear and she runs like a champ. no problems whatsoever. Moved 8 tons fo gravel witht eh box blade and FEL with no problem. I am jacked. Thanks for all of the advice on here. I am one happy, non-mechanically inclined, tractor owner. My wife also thanks you. She stayed away from me all evening Saturday due to my 'demeanor'. I told her it was supposed to be a 15 minute job to change the points, condenser cap & rotor. I got home 3 hours later and it wouldn't run. Man am I happy now. Thank you Thank you Thank you.
