I think I dug up an old outhouse under a tree.
A big tree behind the house died. I felled it and hauled all but the stump off.
I hired a very large Cat. with a big front blade and rear rippers to dig up the stump and haul it off.
Mixed in with the root ball was dozens of old small bottles.
The Cat. also built the pad for my tin shed and piled all the spoils off to the side.

9 years later I get a few buckets of dirt to fill some low spots in the yard and this shell shows up.

I guess someone found it on the beach, got tired of looking at it and threw it in the crapper.

What is the name of the snail shell and where could it be found?

That there was funny.

Now that I know it is a Conch, Google says it came from the Gulf of Mexico. It sounds like it is a rare find. Maybe that explains why it came to central Iowa.

The tree that was growing on/around the shell was about 36" in diameter.
I wonder how old that shell is.

Put it up to your ear and you can hear the ocean.

According to the OP it would be the Gulf of Mexico part of the ocean being heard. Not trying to be pedantic but neverthless not succeeding at not being pedantic.
