I always thought that was the most asinine comment. I wouldn't be where I am today without a few good teachers and professors who kept me on the straight and narrow. I owe them more than I can repay.
Maybe because there were only a few? :D

Or those who cannot teach, teach teachers.

It only takes one to change a life...

Or one to screw up thousands...

I've probably had as many teachers as anybody, and from my experience I have seen both kinds...however I, like Wolfman, was fortunate. I had the best and most inspiring teachers in grade school and high school...the result of a rural system where the teachers were part of the community. In retrospect, I was able to figure out that unbeknownst to me, I received attention and advice at the time that was calculated to help me with my insecurities and give me confidence in my abilities...and I am forever grateful.

2lane, I have as well, back in the day I think teachers seemed to care more.

Today, maybe not so much.

I have have a grandson who has some level of autism, and the state offers special courses for him.
It seems some of the teachers take offense to autistic children, luckily my family moved to a different school system, and he has thrived in a better environment

I hate to speak in generalities, but it seems the teaching profession, with its unions and liberalism, has evolved from a profession that had dedicated teachers who gave their all and appreciated the difference they could make in young people's lives, to a whiney, I-don't-make-enough-money mentality. Not all of course, and it's hard to blame them in a way, since they are much more regimented, and have less control over the classroom and the way they practice their profession. We need to return to the one room school house.

Ya, they went from a city very liberal mind set to a more rural setting, and they teachers do care more.

It may be as you say, the regimentation they live under, but I think it is more of a liberal minded university professor led issue and many of the teachers ( not all by any means ) lap up the milk that those profs spew.

The adage about becoming a teacher when person could not make it in the business world is generally not associated with K-12 classroom teachers...they are for the most part a dedicated lot...
...However in the college and trade school ranks of faculties it is rife with the ilk described in the sayings...

I worked school maintenance for 30 years and saw both sides, admin and teachers. We had many very dedicated, hard working teachers and of course, the Duds, the worthless, tenured, do nothing teachers that were almost impossible to get rid of.

Common sense was lacking and must have been "trained" out of them in order to get that teaching degree. Book knowledge does not a good teacher make. Common sense and empathy help.

A retired principal friend says it is just a lot of work going through the process and some principals don't think it is worth the trouble.

It can take several years of conferences, observations, evaluations, improvement plans, re-evaluation, etc. Then the teacher may just change districts and keep teaching.

in other words...
THEY ARE LAZY

Our little District covered 25,000 square miles and to get rid of worthless tenured teachers, they would be reassigned to a school the furtherest away. You had to make it very miserable for them to get them to leave. At that time, our teachers were the highest paid in the nation and no one wanted to leave.

Because of my Dad's job and transfers, etc., I changed schools 11 times in 12 years, went to 6 different schools. (Yep, moved way, then moved back in some cases). And to get my college degree, I went to 7 different colleges before I finished my batchelor's degree. So I do believe that I've known the best and the worst school teachers and college professors. Just as there are good and bad police officers, doctors, preachers, and every other profession you can name.

Yep. A bad professor got me out of becoming an English teacher. Some good ones got me through my two electronics degrees, multiple certifications in computer related courses, management training, many schools related to newspaper production, etc... the good ones far outweigh the bad ones.

Let's bring the teacher bit back to a bit more lighthearted fun.

An instructor our company brought in to teach a course on project management. Thick Israeli accent. His into/opening was this (before his name even) With dramatic pauses:

Those who can......do.
Those who can't do........teach.
Those who can't teach........manage.
And those who can't manage...........Teach management!

So I am Dr so and so here to teach you project management...

It was a great course and the guy had a lot of common sense.
