Stand close. It's shorter than you think.

I forget the circumstances but many years ago my dad recited the words to me. I vaguely remember that I mentioned to him that I had plenty of time to do whatever, and at the time it seemed that indeed I did. That's when he quoted these words for the first and only time. "Stand close. It's shorter than you think".

I said, "Do what?".

He responded, in that voice that I knew I should listen to, "Son, there was a time a while back when I went into a rest room. There above the urinal was a quote. 'Stand close. It's shorter than you think.' I wondered a bit as I read it, and then it hit me. Life. It's shorter than you think. Stand close so you can embrace it."

I've recited those words to myself many times over the years. Stand close my friends. It truly is shorter than you think. My dad was a very smart man.
