I always thought that was the most asinine comment. I wouldn't be where I am today without a few good teachers and professors who kept me on the straight and narrow. I owe them more than I can repay.
Maybe because there were only a few? :D

Or those who cannot teach, teach teachers.

It only takes one to change a life...

Or one to screw up thousands...

I've probably had as many teachers as anybody, and from my experience I have seen both kinds...however I, like Wolfman, was fortunate. I had the best and most inspiring teachers in grade school and high school...the result of a rural system where the teachers were part of the community. In retrospect, I was able to figure out that unbeknownst to me, I received attention and advice at the time that was calculated to help me with my insecurities and give me confidence in my abilities...and I am forever grateful.

2lane, I have as well, back in the day I think teachers seemed to care more.

Today, maybe not so much.

I have have a grandson who has some level of autism, and the state offers special courses for him.
It seems some of the teachers take offense to autistic children, luckily my family moved to a different school system, and he has thrived in a better environment

I hate to speak in generalities, but it seems the teaching profession, with its unions and liberalism, has evolved from a profession that had dedicated teachers who gave their all and appreciated the difference they could make in young people's lives, to a whiney, I-don't-make-enough-money mentality. Not all of course, and it's hard to blame them in a way, since they are much more regimented, and have less control over the classroom and the way they practice their profession. We need to return to the one room school house.

Ya, they went from a city very liberal mind set to a more rural setting, and they teachers do care more.

It may be as you say, the regimentation they live under, but I think it is more of a liberal minded university professor led issue and many of the teachers ( not all by any means ) lap up the milk that those profs spew.

The adage about becoming a teacher when person could not make it in the business world is generally not associated with K-12 classroom teachers...they are for the most part a dedicated lot...
...However in the college and trade school ranks of faculties it is rife with the ilk described in the sayings...
