Graffiti seen in Berkeley long ago:

Time ... is why everything doesn't happen all at once.

My Dad on troubleshooting a mechanical problem...

. "To find out what it is, first find out what it ain't "

His approach was to rule out the cheapest, easiest, most obvious first, and move up from there.

That's how I was trained to 'fault-find' by the Navy... and how I instructed the Sailors later on. For some reason the schools started teaching the young 'techs' to "drive the books/manuals" and consult the troubleshooting section whenever an equipment fault occurred.

Wrong! I'd have to make them tell me 'what was working' so that they could narrow it down to 'what it wasn't'. Only then would I allow them to touch a manual.

Another from my Dad...

"All things come to he who waits, but only what's left after he who hustles has been there and gone."

Or as my grandmother used to say, if it's anything mechanical give it a good swift kick .

My late Dad had so many sayings. If someone didn't understand what he was explaining he would say "it's like talking up a dead camels ass".

A bit off topic but I've often wondered when did it change from "He plead not guilty" to "He pleaded not guilty"? Which is correct?

As I understand it both are correct. It is mostly a matter of regional dialect.

One dinner Mom had ham and asked Dad to say the blessing. He said "Jerome the pig had to give a little something up so we could eat tonight".

But years ago it was always "plead" and now it is "pleaded". I hear it on national news so what has changed?
It's kind of like changing "he spoke" to "he spoked". :)

This is from dictionary online:
plead
/plēd/
verb
past tense: pleaded; past participle: pleaded

But I think in legal terms plēd pronunciation is wrong (plead as in bleed).
Should be plead as in "bread".
Maybe it's a guilty plea, past tense guilty plead.

"Remember...when you're having your ham and eggs for breakfast, that the chicken was only involved...the pig was totally committed".

The older I get, the more clearly I remember things that never happened.

Mark Twain

I sometimes wonder how many of my early childhood memories really happened. It is sometimes enlightening to compare and contrast old memories of a shared experience with family or friends.

If I'm feeling philosophical, I note the large percentage of my life experience that has vanished from my memory. It makes me realize the importance of appreciating life as it happens. When a moment is over, it's usually gone from memory.

Make sure you dedicate plenty of time to arguing with strangers on the internet!
