That poor abused endangered child will never learn anything by riding on a tractor, school is the only place learning can occur. Before long he'll be answering stupid questions on TBN instead of asking them. MikeD74T

I dont take it too lightly, if things go wrong you all will have a different tune.

There are many different breeds of people. I was raised on a tractor since i was 5. My 60yo neighbour used to borrow our tractor and allways returned with damage, or we had to pull him from a ditch. He drove first when he was 45...

We had some African folks over for a church congress. They wondered if we never worried when it storms, living behind dikes. ...No we dont, only the older people that have seen the 1953 floodings.
...And what about you, do you never worry that a lion or hyena will get you or one of your family members, out there in Africa ?? "...no we dont, we know there is some danger, but we dont see it as a threat and never think about it..."

I'm not saying you're overreacting nor disrespecting your concern, just i got raised differently and grew up being taught the risks. My mother will never learn, shes just not aware of the risk. She shaved her finger on the PTO powered firewood saw last month, and now we wont let her get near it. (She grew up with household appliances and a milking machine, the rest was boys work when she grew up ;) )

Darwin at work? Only problem is the wrong one will be "selected" to be removed from the gene pool if he slips off and the wheel or box blade gets him.....

You could be right but, I was baby sat on the fender of a tractor and was operating them at 8 years of age. (low gear) Good thing is he may have a chance to learn how to work instead of reading about it.

ALL the risk is taken by the boy. Good ole dad might get a nice warm tingly feeling having "The Boy" accompany him as he goes about doing the chores but one little mishap and the KID, not DAD could very easily end up injured, maimed for life, or killed.

This situation is all about dad stroking his own ego. Shame on him.

+1

I started driving the "B" when I had to shut the ignition off to stop and then I could jerk on the clutch to get it diisengaged. Start the tractor back up and place my back against the seat and use my foot to engage the clutch.

What happened to the days when people took responsibility for their actions? Example: You ran and fell while playing at a friends house and their wasn't even a thought given to sueing some one.

rant over

I don't see anything wrong.

I too grew up in a different time (which was not all that long ago).

Never had any tractors with ROPS, or seat saftey switches, etc. I learned my way around a tractor on an 8n ford. I had to stand up to reach the clutch. If it had a seat switch, I'd wouldn't have got to drive for at least 3 more years.

I always remember riding with dad like that. Standing on the floorboard and sitting on the tool box.

He (dad) is always telling me stories of his chilhood on the farm. Discing the fields all by himself when he was only 8 years old with their old oliver cause it was their only tractor with a hand clutch. Or the times he was riding just like in the pics when grandpa was plowing and falling asleep. Grandpa would hit the clutch (which would stop quick with the plow in the ground) and he would fall right off the tractor.

Everything has risks and some things are just plain stupid. But people were raised differently and come from different backgrounds. What may look dangerous to one, may be common practice to another.

Foresight.

Risk acceptance/aversion.

Actually testable human traits. Not binary, but come in degrees/ability to see/predict what might happen and how far into the future the event might be and the consequences of the event. Kinda like a normal distribution with a standard deviation or two on each side.:)

Comments re the recalled joys of early childhood tractor operation are a biased sample. Only those who survived childhood with sufficient mental capacity to post on TBN can participate.

The OP had it right....you decide...the kid can't.

There have been numerous posts lately of childhood tractor deaths while riding on a tractor, in FEL or otherwise.

Not every kid on a tractor meets with tragedy, some do. You decide.
