I actually miss my set and regret getting rid of it.
In today's climate of PC even well known old facts that no longer line up with the gate keepers are getting scrubbed.

Yeah, like those maps that always showed the U.S. as being larger than the soviet union or the continent of Africa....

I had a nice encyclopedia set that I got rid of 46 years ago since my wife knows everything.
I worked for Paktron in early 70s, I was a mechanic working on the pneumatic machines that made capacitors. The noise level was beyond deafening and I quit after a week. Not just the noise but after figuring out how those complex machines worked it was repetitious.
It would be like repairing one specific model lawnmower, every day all day. Same thing, no challenge.

We had a business about 20 years ago making lures, I could assemble about 100 a day and thought I was pretty good but it was really boring, as it grew I took on two girls who assembled them while watching soap operas and easily managed 700-800 a day and never complained abour boredom.
Some can, some can't, even now I spend Friday mornings preparing invoices and I find that mind numbing.

You know, this thread brought back some memories. I'm an identical twin. Parents divorced and my brother lived with my mom in Florida. I lived with dad in Vermont.

My brother took a job with a local sub shop in high school. Thought when he was hired he would be making sandwiches or at least working inside. Nope..... on his first day after orientation he showed up and the manager handed him a pickle costume . It happened to 95 degrees outside and no shade. He lasted about an hour and then went inside, peeled off the pickle costume and told the manager to stuff it.

I guess that I don't understand the reason for the first post, at all. The guy worked one day and didn't return. If it was a professional level job, where management and the employee had talked several times it would be one thing. Apparently that wasn't the case; instead he was offered the job and realized that it wouldn't work. While he could have handled it better what exactly was lost? He's gone, and rather than investing time in him they are now able to look for someone who is a better fit.

We have my wifes World Book Encyclopedia set from when she was a kid. I grew up with the same set, but ours had the snot used out of it. Many school reports were sourced there, some word for word on a Sunday night if due Monday :(

Believe it or not. Many can't pass a drug test, after that criminal back ground check, after that, driving record. Have to interview a lot of people to get one candidate that can pass all three

My friends all start with driving record... if it is not clear end of story and little invested.

While I never would quit after a day on a job, much less quit by by text message with no notice.

Having said that and as has been mentioned, employers regularly give no notice other than come into the office and bring all your company owned equipment with you when they lay someone off. I have seen this happen to 30 year employees.

I once witnessed a manager leave lay off notices on peoples chairs when they went to lunch.

It is a different world these days.

I've wondered about that when ownership was changing and my job was slated not to transfer... I have personal tools, racks, carts, computer, diagnostic, genie lift, pallet jack, etc... that are bought an paid for by me and receipts for everything bought while employed as I deducted them from my taxes as unreimbursed employee expenses...

Twice I had asked managers to sign and both times was told it was just an oversight and so far this has been the case.

Sometimes it only takes a day...

One of the cashiers at the local Hardware store working her way through college had been robbed too many times and wanted to get into a safe profession without handling money... she chose medical and started learning the vocabulary...

We had a opening in Central Supply and I told her to apply... she did and they told her to report... after she was told to report... a person with several years experience interviewed and they chose her too...

So the person I know only worked one week which was the time for the other person to start... no one knew we had a connection.

My friend also applied at Kaiser... Kaiser is known for only hiring people with experience... first question asked was do you have any medical experience... she said yes... working for my place...

The interview continued and she was hired... quite a feat... that was 15 years ago and she rose up through the ranks and heads the Well Baby program... great benefits including retirement and family medical...

She still thanks me for getting her in but it was only for one week...

Never know how things will work out.

By the way... the super star with experience started calling in sick right after she married... one of the Doctors hired her away from us... no problem... she was on the job a few weeks and told him she was 4 months pregnant... he was not happy because she had complications and was off medically for a long time and when it was time to come back quit for cause and drew unemployment...

The future employee and "management" did talk more than one once, he came refered from his employeer (who we knew within our same industry from out of state) and the guy was relocating to NC (and has since moved to NC before being on the job "one day").

My confusion is that if you are a "professional" and you're in a job you don't like or can't stay with, you give a two week notice with the expectation that you will be let go that day and plan accordingly. You don't text the next morning informing your employeer that you won't be coming back (more than childish IMO). This is assuming you are an adult, you've been in the workforce for sometime, and you understand that a job is important.

If ANYTHING, you give detailed feedback as to why you only worked one day. I understand exit interviews can be a farce, but sometimes they do help.

I completely understand that as an employee you can be dicked over no matter how long you worked at a job, but other than family and friends, as an adult, I do see a job being ranked very high as a degree of importance in ones life if you need money to live. That said, if you don't need the money and you thought the boss had bad BO and you don't want to come back, say the boss had bad BO and you aren't coming back.
