Have any of you read the news articles about the next generation of the internet that is being planed? Google, Yahoo, Bing, Microsoft and PC manufactures are planning to do away with the hard drives in your PC and store your data in their network servers. Aside from the ton of things I do not like about it are issues of privacy. Who owns the data, your data? Once all this data is contained at one point, what is stopping the government from saying, we want it? Now hackers have to work at getting the data from your pc, put all that data in one place, what keeps the data from being sold, or mined?

It's referred to as "cloud computing". Might be ok for businesses but I'll pass on that concept. Do you really want Google to have access to your tax returns!

Called " Cloud Computing " and not for me...I would never use on line back up as it is so I sure won't be using a computer for any of my personal data..finances and such...No problem using one to browse the internet but I will just stop using a computer after the one I have breaks if all that is left is what you describe....I believe it is crazy to trust anyone with your personal information...look at Wikileaks..they got Top Secret documents...so they would sure be able to get ours...

This is a variation of Application Service Providers.... which didn't go anywhere either. Cloud computing is not geared towards the home users.

Once this camel has its nose in the tent there is no telling where it will go.
Why would businesses outsource their data to someone else? What happens when they log into their account only to find that their records are all gone? Small startup corp. XYZ has a hot new item and is in comporation with giant PQR. How many times have you read about cyber attacks from China trying to get into our power grid? Never happen? The true inventor of the telephone lost his patents to Bell; they both shared the same lab at different times. RCA stole the Triode tube, RCA could not explain how it works.

Outsourcing of processing, which includes data storage, already happens and has been happening for a long time. This is simply another concept that uses the public internet versus private networks between companies. Loss of reputation, loss of business, loss of shareholder value etc etc is what keeps everyone very aware of what is going on with system performance, data redundancy etc etc. Like I said this is not for the the home user, this is a 'lease versus own' model for, what I see as, a small subset of companies in particular businesses that might benefit.

William Gibson, Philip K Dick and a host of others saw this coming decades ago. What's old is new. Bah. Humbug! It just demonstrates the lack of imagination in Silicon Valley and Hollywood - nothing but remakes and makeovers.

We've all heard the past rumors about charging for emails. Companies have been licking their chops to get money for our use of the Internet. Is this a step in that direction?

yes.

But a much bigger threat is the lack of net neutrality. MUCH BIGGER. and related to that, "usage charges"

Like your ISP charging you $X.00 PER MB to use Netflicks vs. their service for free.

This is a current battle going on here as Netflix is about to launch their internet streaming services in direct conflict with the ISP's (many of whom are cable /satellite TV providers) services.

Throw in the fact that most on the regulatory board have direct ties to these major providers and its a bad day for consumers.

Agreed. But I think the Top Secret thing is just media hype. There may be something that has the words top secret on it in the wiki collection, but it is extremely unlikely that there are any bona fide T/S documents or information. Thats a whole different ball game than the Confidential or "Secret" chatter in the media.

How many accurate predictions have there been about what the future holds for the Internet? Not many. Who saw Twitter coming? Who saw Facebook coming? How about YouTube? Even Netscape took the world by surprise. All of these innovations transformed the Internet and they were all started by individuals without a takeover plan. I think anytime a big corporation predicts they are about to change the Internet, it hardly ever comes to pass. Google didn't invent the search engine. Rarely does true innovation come from big companies brain storming up in their Ivory Towers. Almost always does it come from an individual who is able to think without boundary conditions set up by a big company.
