what is the difference between these?

the GT 1554 and 2554? I have only seen the gt1554 at the two local tractor supply stores here. Tractor supply said they could order one of the 2554s for me but I don't know what the difference is. According to the cubcadet website the gt1554 has more horsepower but I don't see any other difference.

I will be mowing a lot of grass with this thing if I get it so I need to make sure I'm getting the best one of the bunch.

2554 is shaft drive to the transmission. GT1554 is belt drive. Difference in HP is because the shaft transfers power to the tranny with less loss than the belt. 2554 has a horizontal shaft engine, 1554 vertical. and I believe the 2554 has a heavier duty transmission.

If you want the best one that would be the GT2554 no question about it. There are 2 1554 models. The SLT 1554 is a heavy duty lawn tractor. The GT 1554 is a light duty garden tractor. The GT2554 is a heavy duty garden tractor. The 2500 and 3000 series is Cub Cadets top of the line models in the garden tractor category.

The 1554 has plastic hood and grill the 2554 is steel.
1554 lighter duty aluminum tranny with no filter and no way to add or change fluid.2554 heavy duty cast iron tranny with filter and the fluid can be added or changed.
1554 Non pressurized engine oiling. 2554 better pressurized system .
1554 12 Ga frame. 2554 heavier gage frame.
1554 belt drive from engine to tranny. 2554 shaft drive between engine and tranny.

The 1554 and 2554 sure do look alike don't they, but as I've pointed out looks sure can be deceiving can't they?

A word about the high HP found on all brands of lawn tractors. The manufactures are in a HP race to out do each other in the name of creating sales. There is no benefit to the consumer in this as the lawn tractors are under built and unable to fully utilize this excessive HP. The lower powered better built Garden tractors are far more capable of performing task than are the over powered under built lawn tractors.

The 2554 is more worth it's price than is the 1554 worth it's price.

I wouldn't buy any CC under the 2500 series.

You don't want to get either one at a box store.
Go to a CC dealer and buy the same tractor for the same price and get better service.

LBrown has some facts wrong, but the gist is correct:

Both have plastic hoods and grills.

1554 Non pressurized engine oiling. 2554 better pressurized system.

Both have full pressurization, but the GT1554 uses a Courage vertical shaft engine, which is lower end consumer engine that has less than 1/2 the estimated life of the Command engines (that come in the 2500's).

The summary is that with all the 2500's over the 1500's, you get a better engine, a better (and shaft driven) tranny, heavier duty frame, and heavier duty bits and pieces.

Is it worth the extra $1200? To me, yes. To someone that will only mow <2 acres and do no ground work, it's debatable. Based on your other post I'd say a 2500 is about as small as you'd want to go. You sound like you're going to need the durability.

But no matter what you get, get it from a dealer.

Apparently according to what you post there have been changes on both the 1554 and 2554 since then.
I do know that my GT2554 definitely does have a steel hood and grill.

Yea, yours is a 2005. The 2006's went to a plastic hood. Don't know about the 1500's though, as I didn't do much research on them back in early '06.

Around my area (NE Ohio) the big box stores, Home Depot, TSC, sell only 1000 & 1500 series. I've only seen the 2500 series at the tractor dealer.

2005 was the only year for the steel hoods on the 2500's.As stated by CCinCT the GT1554 has full apressurization the LT1000's do to.Also the wt of the 2554 is 846 lbs the GT1554 is 587 lbs.Hp well all i can say is my 3235 has 25 hp my GT 1554 has 27 hp cant even compare the two.If i was you i would get the 2554.But i do like my GT1554 for mowing and lite duty.I wish you luck.
