Comparison What is the best brand of tractor?

/ What is the best brand of tractor? #301
The best brand of tractor has to be the brand that inspires the operator to take proper care of their tractor.

Huh? I believe that comes with a diligent owner/operator that actually keeps equipment for the long haul. One that follows the manuals and schedules... 10hr bearings all the way to 100hr bearings. Open the manual and the tractor may last longer than you. :)

Too true Paul. I think the average guy on this forum, even though they may not have thousands of machine hours, is above average in that they actually want to know about their gear. As opposed to those steering wheel attendant types who turn up the music to hide that new noise in the back.
I reckon delete their warning labels would be great start to thinning them out, hence the tongue-in-cheek comment.. that said, a certain top-level European brand has more than its fair share of reliability issues due to being overly computerized, many of the sensor failures etc are in no way caused by the operator or environment. Just too complicated, in both senses of the word. That kinda kills the 'you get what you pay for' rule of thumb. $$$$$ dont talk.
That won't happen to 99.9% of the guys on here, the less sensors you have the less problems you have for the first 4000 hours at least.

Friend of mine has 800 cattle. Doesn't appear you are struggling much. :)

I couldn't imagine 800, that's crazy. Well I could but would be about 200 times bigger than my set up.

I gave $250 for that dump truck lol, only reason I'm not struggling much is because I have a full time job to support my cattle habit lol.

I'm down to 3, the 4th has another 10 days of dry aging.

I'm broke enough to have to haul cattle with a 4x6 trailer that I don't own, I don't even own the quad I used to get back there with because my 81 F150 is 2wd and it's too dang muddy here.

The jersey wouldn't leave the other steer, keeping the jersey in was almost harder than loading the other steer up. I have to halter them and keep there head down so there not tempted to jump out of the little trailer.

When dad retired he had 3 small herds that totaled around 90 to 100 head. Around 30 plus at each farm. It took a good bit of time to feed up in the winter even with tractors at each location. At 72 he finally retired and sold all the cows but kept the machinery. I just finally sold the last of the tractors and a couple of disc harrows. Sorta sad but time marches on.

Jerseys can be hard work! Our dairy herd had about 500 pedigree jerseys and totalled 750. If anything had problems, it was seldom a crossbred! Our rule of thumb is, a cow per acre or just a bit over. That allows the cattle to keep the grass largely under control for most of the season, some mowing either before or after the herd graze. This eliminates seedhead formation and keeps everything growing, as pasture stops producing once it's gone into its reproductive stage. We would stop milking at the end of may, before our winter, and then most dairy herds are grazed outside on crops here. The barn is slowly catching on here. I would never go back to grazing everything outside, it has increased our farm size effectively.

I looked at new holland 37 workmaster, liked that tractor also, was built nice, had a 66in bucket when most in its class had a 60 but got a quoit back from the dealer 8 days after looking at the tractor and that machine came in at around $6,000 more than the Kubota, lift was better, weight was heavier but no thank you on the price. Boomer being more and closer to the grand series of Kubota and R of JD.

Thank you Farmer John! I've been reading though all of these posts and there was more conversation about pie, cake and ice cream than there was about the New Holland 37 Workmaster. I'm looking for my first compact tractor and find myself leaning towards the NH. I've also looked at the JD, Mahindra, and Yanmar. I don't like the color orange. Of all the dealers in my area, the New Holland is best. The pricing on 3 of them were within $1,000. Yanmar was $5,000 more. I think you helped me choose the NH. Thanks for your input.

There is so much competition today in the compact tractor segment, that all the tractor manufacturer's have to put out quality tractors to compete. Also, due to the internet, folks can get reviews on basically every type of compact tractor out there. Another factor that puts pressure on manufacturer's to build solid tractors to sell. Even in the small amount of time since I purchased my tractor a lot has changed. Technology just keeps getting better and more inventive (on most things). In the area I live in there is Mahindra, JD, MF, Kubota, CASE, Kioti, LS, and New Holland dealers all with-in an hour radius. Talk about hard choices.

There is also something to be said about the old tractors. I see many a farmer and neighbors running 50 year old tractors all the time. Also they are less complicated than the newer ones. Where would we be today without tractors? We live in a time where you can go to a tractor dealer and get everything you can possibly think of to accomplish yard and gardening work, or go online while sitting in the lazy-boy and have it delivered to your house. There is a type/kind of tractor out there for individuals from the 1 acre homeowner all the way up to the 1,000 acre farmer. You have SCUTS, CUTS, Utility, Premium, Basic, Specialty, TLB, and on and on. You can get a tractor today that does everything from mowing your yard to digging a footer for a foundation and everything else in between and not even use up a tank of fuel to do it. Absolutely amazing the tools out there today to help us maintain our properties and businesses.

As for me, I don't have a clue what the best tractor out there is, but there is a gozillian choices and opinions out there to help make your buying decisions that much harder. LOL

LMAO! I made this thread for one reason, fanboys who boast about brands and not tractors themselves.

After everyone was in agreement that no one tractor brand stands out as the best this thread went to many different topics.

I also was a fan of the workmaster 37, I looked at that one when I was on the hunt, I had the same experience on a quoit, NH (15 mins away) was the first tractor I looked at, Case was 30 mins away, JD was 25 mins away, Mahindra was 25 mins away and Kubota was less than 10 mins. All dealers in diff directions and visited on diff days, the NH quoit came in last lol like 2 weeks after visiting the dealer and it came in way above the rest, case was a grand or two less than the NH. So those were out. NH warranty was absolutely terrible, 1 year on attachments like the FEL and 2 years on the tractor, that was a joke.

Mahindra was 7 years, Kubota 6, JD was 5 or 6 can't remember and NH comes in at 2 and costs the most lol.

Between the L3901, 3038E, Workmaster 37, Case (can't remember the model, they didn't have one on the lot) and Mahindra 1533, I was gonna sign on the dotted line for the 1533, it came in as the best bang for the buck between the rest, I got more attachments in the deal ext.

I wouldn't consider the E series from JD, I like JD a lot, I love my local JD deal but I hate there E series. Cheap is an understatement, is like the big box store "D" mowers are to tractors.

I ended up buying a used cabbed 4320 and love it too.

So here's my summery of CUTs, non are made in the USA, not fully and some excel in different aspects of tractoring that's more attractive to diff people, I wouldn't say any are junk and need to be avoided, dealer network is important no matter which you chose.

I asked around to a few farmers, which one to buy, and the best non biased answer I got was, "all tractors break down no matter what color, buy the one that's easiest to get parts for"

I like my NHTC30. I've had it 5 years or so- put on 600 of the 1200 hours on it. Good tractor.
