What is the best 24 volt to 12 volt conversion kit for a 1963 Deere 4010 diesel?

I intend to use 1 group 31 battery. Mounted by the starter. I need a new battery box anyway.

I don't understand the question. According to Tractor Data your tractor has a twelve volt charging system. Group 31 is a physical size and these batteries seem to also be twelve volt. Where does 24 volts come in?

Are you familiar with that era of John Deere tractors, 3020, 4010, 4020 diesel tractors? They had 24 volt starters and a generator.

There are kits to swap them to 12 volt. The 2 long skinny batteries do not seem to last, so I am switching to 12 volt and switching to a truck battery.
Not all kits are created equal. On some the alternator does not attach or line up properly

In my experience, most of the diesels were 24 volt up until about 1968 or so. I have never seen a 12 volt diesel that was OEM from the early years.
If you know, you know. All 3010, 4010 diesels and 3020 and 4020 diesels until the 1969 model year had 24 volt starting and charging systems. .

Spark ignition tractors of the same models and timeframes were 12v positive ground.
All had Delco generators.

Do you have an opinion on a good problem free conversion kit?

I get real irritated when I pay extra money for a kit and then the alternator has to have the pulley changed or a mount made.

If I wanted to do that stuff, I'd just buy an alternator and starter & skip the kit.

No, I'm sorry, I don't. I owned a 4010 diesel for a while years ago and it started and charged on 24 volts every day I owned it. The rest of the Deere tractors I owned were all 1969 and newer models.
