I have seen a couple of references to splitting the tractor to repair items such as sticking FWD/RVS pedal and clutch.
What exactly does this term mean ??

I'd think one would simply do the needed repair so what exactly are we splitting?

It means splitting the cases( engine, trans, rear end) to access otherwise inaccessible areas for repair.

Not if you have a shop do it...It's a pain to do yourself, but as long as you block everything well to keep it from rolling/falling on the floor, it can be done.

Splitting involves separating the tractor into two big pieces. I've never done it myself, but I suspect that all of the hydraulic lines, control linkages and electrical connections between the 2 halves need to separated, too. On a newer, complex tractor this looks like a major part of the work. That and fixturing both halves, as adirndack describes, so that nothing drops or tips over, but so that one half can be rolled away from the other, then back together to reassemble eveything once the repairs have been done.

Difficulty depends on the tractor. A tractor is basically 3 major parts. A rear axle, transmission, and engine. To take any one of those items separate from the other is "splitting" the tractor.

Modern tractors with lots of electrical, and tractors with loaders or backhoes can be very difficult.

Older tractors that the engine-transmission-rear end were all heavy cast iron and had no other frame work, those were easy. Like an old ford 8n. You could split one of those in an hour or two to change a clutch.

Sometimes trains do it.

It's not as glamorous as one may think. It's usually done with floor jacks and jack stands, not the fancy fixtures they show in the manuals. I've split more than I can count, many of those in the dirt using a piece of 1 1/8" plywood for the jack to roll on.
