This is a peeve on steroids!:::
My wife & I are to attend a wedding October first in Lisbon, Portugal...I'm an usher.
We went to our local post office for passports two months ago. About $400, application, pictures, etc. Wife received hers two weeks later...I never got mine. Instead I get email & letter saying I never signed application.
So back to post office where they showed a copy & I DID sign it. So more $, another application & picture, resubmitted.
I called 2 weeks ago, US State Department, agent assured me I'd receive it on time & check back today which I just did. Agent said they're working on it & I need pay another $82 to expedite but no guarantee I'd get it in time!
I said why don't I pay $1,000 to be sure it's on time...agent disconnected call.
I call my Congressman & had to print/copy/email a consent form which I did.
What a h/// to go through!

Don't you love the Federal Government? Incompetence and no accountability.

The USA medical is so messed up that, and controlled by big pharma, I have to correct them, that the drugs are counter indicated some times. And they go "Oh, you are right on this." And I'm not a medical doctor. Yet, this happens all the time now.

NLA parts that make a complex machine nothing more than land fill.

Maybe its just me, but in the last 15 years, I find that there are more people that drive as if they are entitled and drive aggressively. Driving, in my mind, is a shared risk. We share the risk because it is very convenient, and relatively inexpensive these days if you have a small vehicle. In my area, every one else has a crazy huge vehicle. And they complain about gas prices, and low MPG. "Well, why did you buy that F-250? You are not a farmer, and you don't tow anything or use it like a truck." The answer is always the same, "I feel safer in it." Which I read as, "You feel more isolated from your surroundings." They are in their two ton, 400 HP, living room, with an Entertainment Center, and airbags everywhere. Driving is nothing more than a video game, till bad stuff happens.
In the US, a driver's test should be three times harder to pass than it is now. And we need a better class license system, more than the few we have today.

Agreed. There isn't much that European countries do better than us, but this is definitely one place they have us beat, as they make it much more difficult and expensive to get a driver's license. In addition to a higher level of training and competence, it comes with a greater desire to protect that right, lest you have to pay a whole boatload of time and money to regain the privilege.

My own driving test never exceeded 10 mph, it was conducted entirely in a parking lot at the state police barracks. I'm a good driver, but the test I took wouldn't tell the proctor that, one way or the other.

One thing we do well in PA, and maybe it's national, is put a pretty steep ramp on insurance rates for those who haven't completed a fairly lengthy driver's ed course. There are two components to ours, several weeks of classroom + a few days on-road. I don't remember the hours to each, but I remember taking a good chunk of one school year, around age 15-16.

Well, they can be picky here, too, if they want to.

Guess the short DMV person instantly put me at a disadvantage when having to climb, literally, into my Jeep for the driving test, but where it got interesting was when asked to turn around on a relatively narrow residential street.

Not that the cutting angle was good since I still had the closed knuckle front axle, but on the other hand I knew my Jeep really well.

There was a bit of a gap between the parked vehicles on the right, which I took advantage of, and no cars on the other side. Relatively certain that I'd make the turn without having to back up I went for it. Cleared the curb by maybe two inches.

This made him quite angry. Guess I was supposed to have to back up. Oh well, I still passed and got my first American driver's license, necessary to get insurance here.
