what is non-detergent oil

The only time I've seen a manual call for non-detergent oil was in a pressure washer sump. It called for a non-foaming or non-detergent oil, so I assumed it has something to do with the foaming quality of the oil?

I don't know if this will apply to your tractor or not, however when discussing oil changes with a fellow Bolens owner I learned that he changed the ATF fluid with hytrans fluid and the tractor stopped working when it got hot. When he put back the automatic transmission oil that his machine had specified, the problem went away. I am now leaning toward believing that the new oils of today won't work well in machinery of yesterday, and vice versa. You might want to get a second opinion from a dealer that services the type of transmission that you have in your tractor. If the slippers inside the transmission are worn, nothing is going to fill the close tolerances that are required to get it going again. That is my experience with hydro transmissions. Hopefully for you that will not be the case. Junk......

What type of ATF fluid did it call for? The power steering pump in my truck calls for type-f atf fluid. type-f has friction enhancers. Newer fluids don't have friction enchancers. I had to look all over town to find someone who even stocked the older type-f atf fluid.

I've noticed that NAPA sells a friction enhancer addative for ATF applications where an enhancer is needed.. etc.

Many older tractors have no oil filter or 'bypass' oil filters. You need to use non detergent oil in these engines. Non detergent oils let the solids in the oil settle to the bottom and it stays there. Detergent oils keep the particles suspended so they get captured by an oil filter in modern engines. Using a detergent oil in an engine that has no filter or a bypass filter will keep the particles suspended and will wear the engine out much quicker.

if it has a filter it needs detergent oil... even if it is a partial filter / flow system like the old ford N.

no detergents and the junk never makes it to the filter...

In some applications with no filter.. detergent oil is still called for.

see lots of lawnmowers spec'ing syn ( high detergent ) oil.... same with air comps...

I know we use non in all the small motors. Like in rototillers, mowers, pressure washers and such. Saw an older Briggs start to smoke and then go after switching to detergent.

So are most of the new small motors still calling for non?

I don't know of ANY calling for NON.

My 16yr old murray with a brigs, if you lookup the recs online.. they have CNAHGED them to recomending syn / detergent.

on a side note..many small engines these days also now have a filter too...

We have an old 1940's Wisconsin V4 that was off a baler..We turned it into the power source for a water pump.. It calls for non detergent oil.. We've messed up a couple times over the years and put detergent oil in it, and it blows oil foam out the filler neck when it gets hot..I don't know why, just know it does..

well of course if you look at the spec manual for a 70+ year old machine it's gonna say non det.

I know many people running wisconsons on regular det oil.

my 40's era and up tractors are all running modern 15w40 S/C rated oil.

Do you use stone tools and wear bear skins because that's what they did 'back then'

that's about the same deal here.

PS.. modern oil has anti foaming properties and other benefits plain jane oil then and .. the junk sold as ND now, have.
