My neighbor disced our field today in preparation for lime and seeding next week. He saw a lot of rocks (not good for the seeder), so he asked me to pick them up with my loader. One of the things I found while filling the FEL bucket five times is in the attached photo. Any idea what this thing is?

Looks like some sort of pipe joint, something to deal with the water leaving a building rather than coming into it.

I take it this piece is hollow, no bottom.

It's made of metal and it has a bottom.

Need more info Mike...

Is the bottom solid? Any hole(s) in it? What kind of metal? Is it cast, turned, formed? Any markings, decoration. How thick are the walls, and are they consistent? I was going to suggest a spacer of some sort, like on a disc but that would have had a hole in the bottom. Maybe just a decorative pot of some sort /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I thought it was a pipe flange of some sort, but the wife says no. It has a solid bottom according to her. She's seen them at local antique shops. She says folks used them as decorative pots to hold taters and onions. I still say it has no bottom and looks like a flange. Was she right?

Seen something like that in a old black smith shop, and water was inside cooling down the hot iron work.

Mike, How big is it? It could be part of an old castiron planter(flower pot). They were made in sections and this would be the spacer between the base and the bowl. Just a guess, without seeing and holding its hard to tell.

Yep, solid. No holes anywhere.

Looks like cast iron.

No markings.

Walls are about a 1/4 inch and thin out near the lip.

I was thinking disc as well, but without the hole, I agree with others that this might be some kind of planting pot

Sorry, Pete. Your wife was probably right. It has a solid bottom. I picked it up so it wouldn't create a problem for the seeder, but then I thought it might have come off the disc the farmer used. Upon closer inspection, it was filled with dirt and looks like it was in the ground for a while.
