So could you explain why my JD240 is classified as a garden tracor then???

The only option attachments were a front blade, snow blower, and a mower deck. NO tiller or other ground engaging attachments.

I've always considered a Lawn Tractor to have a lighter built power train and a Garden Tractor to have a heavier built power train, with the difference being the GT was designed to handle all attachments including ground engaging equipment while the LT was designed for the same usage except for ground engaging equipment. That being said, there's nothing saying one company's GT is heavier built than another company's LT and there's nothing preventing any company from calling their product a GT when it more properly should be called a LT. Semantics, eh?

to: ld1 what i said was what the guys in shop called them. what the engineer called them could be different. and the year may enter into it.

Well, if you google "difference between garden tractor and lawn tractor" you will get a ton of info.

Basically a garden tractor typically has the following differences between a lawn tractor

1. Larger rear tires
2. Heavier duty transmission
3 Heavier duty frame

But as Mace pointed out, a "lawn" tractor from one company may be heavier duty than a "garden" tractor from another. It really is a grey area. Something that is more of opinion and less of fact. The guys in the shop could be wrong, the engineers could be wrong, we all could be wrong. But I'll call them whatever the MFG advertises them as.

And for the older tractors, there's tractordata.com. At the top it will list the tractor type.

For example, my 240 "garden tractor" TractorData.com John Deere 240 tractor information

But you really cant use that as a reference for the newer ones. Because it even calls the X500 and x700 series JD's as "lawn tractors"

This is a very good question. Do I have an answer? Not even remotely! I own a Ford 1510, which, in spite of the turf tires and small size, is defined by tractordata.com as an farm tractor. It has a heavy cast iron frame, diesel engine, gear drive, PTO, 3-pt hitch, and I can see the argument for it as it can do a large variety of farm jobs. Swap rims and it can be fitted with R1 tires and plow, disk or row cultivate a garden.
My John Deere L111, on the other hand is classified as a lawn tractor. The frame is made out of formed sheet metal and light weight rails, it has a Briggs and Stratton engine, hydrostatic transmission and a belly mower and does one thing well: mow the grass. It can also tow a small garden cart, but that's about it. Once again, I can see the argument for it.

In between these two are a vast myriad of machines made by many companies that really blur the lines and definitions. They are smaller and lighter than my Ford, but have the 3-pt hitch and PTO. Many of them come equipped with belly mowers and their smaller, lighter frames make for very decent mowing machines. The hydrostatic transmissions coupled with power steering make for very smooth operation around the tight confines of the yard, yet they can use just about every type of implement known to man, so they are also at home in the field. What are they called?

Tractors, I guess.

well i didnt mean to cause trouble. i was just saying what i learned in the mid 70s. i am NOT putting down any machine. just saying what i thought i learned years ago, that be out of date now. i am sure the brands others have are good machines. i left other forums, radio control, cause it turned into a kids sand box. i like this forum cause it is NOT a kids sand box .
