Just received my new Howse 5' Grader Blade. To me it looks pretty beefy and I'm hoping it will do everything I need it to do. ie: Plowing snow, Grading my drive and some light trenching. Now, I was wondering what this part that I have left over could possibly be? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

It is not noted anywhere in the user's manual. It is some sort of casting..............

To me, it doesn't even look like it belongs with the blade. It almost looks like some sort of table for a woodworking or metal working machine...... I just don't know. I'd hate to use the blade and find out that this part is crucial in some way.

I'm with Doug...
I don't think that's part of your blade.

Duber,

I don't have a clue.

However, I couldn't help but notice that you have your mower deck stored upright. Would you be so kind as to post a couple pics of that? I would like to see how you did it, and possibly copycat your design.

Thanks

KillerB,

I'll get some pictures posted in short order. I have to tell you though the stand is NOT pretty. I was in a big hurry to get the deck stored out of the way for winter so I just threw that frame together down and dirty. I hoisted the deck upright using a winch I have mounted to a rafter. Once it was upright, I just built a simple frame around it using scrap lumber I had in the garage. Building it though gave me some good ideas for when I rebuild the mower caddy in the future. The future version will definately have casters. Pictures shortly.

Dave

It looks like a table extension for a band saw. What is that on the floor next to your tractor in the last picture? It looks like a dead animal.

KillerB,

Here are a couple of pictures of my mower deck stored upright. Basically it's just these 2 "A-Frames" holding the deck up. It's not very elegant by any means but for no $$$ out of my pocket and maybe an hours worth of labor........ I can live with it for a season. Thanks for your interest.

Regards,
Dave

JimR,

/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thats just a pile of garage sweepings. Mostly sawdust from building a platform to set some HO train track on for the holidays. Some leaves that got blown into the garage are in that pile too. Guess I shoulda house cleaned before snapping pictures. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I like the idea of hanging the mower upright. I wonder how hard it would be to set up a small winch to pull my 6 footer upright against the wall in the barn. This website is so full of ideas it keeps me too busy.

Thanks all for responding about that mystery part. I can't imagine why it was included with my blade. Maybe I can mount it as a work surface/table for my 6 X 48" belt sander......

To me your extra peice goes on at least a 8" jointer. Looks very close to my delta jointer.

I just received a new Howse 5' farm blade two weeks ago from Northern Tools. It didn't have any part with it that looked like the piece you asked about. They may have stuck that in just for "shipping" purposes?! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
On a related note, I was disappointed with my blade, in that the two steel pieces (painted black) which join the lower pins to the top link were twisted at the bottom and bowed out badly at the top so that I couldn't get a top link pin to extend through them. I've since used heat and a small sledge hammer to get them shaped much closer to what they should be but I've still had to order a longer Cat. 1 top link pin to fit between to two vertical pieces I'm referring to, since my existing pins are just shy (in length)of being able to engage. It'll make me think twice about ordering over the internet versus buying from a local dealer next time.

There is a spacer that holds those 2 arms at a specific distance. According to the users manual that came with the blade, the spacer should be 3/4 X 1" for Cat I and 1 X 1" for Cat. II. I too had a problem with my pin being too short to span the distance. I measured the spacer and it was 1 1/2 X 1" I just cut it in half. Now I have a 3/4" spacer on the tractor, my pin is long enough and I have a spare spacer on the shelf. I'm sorry you aren't happy with your blade. I'm quite pleased with mine so far. Granted I have only had it a few hours so time will be more telling.

Dave

duber, I think it looks like a dead animal too. You could leave the pile there to show distant friends you live in the country via photos! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Kinda lends a little character. I don't know what that casting is either, but it appears to 13 1/2" long. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Johnday,

I'm gonna go kick that pile to make sure it isn't breathing.

I think you may have nailed it with that casting that was included with my blade. It may have been some sort of shipping protection.

Dave
