My son just inherited a totally refurbed 8N. Now it time to go implement shopping.
How big of a bush hog can the 8N handle comfortably ? Is a 5ft appropriate ?

Will the tractor be able to handle a post hole digger with 9" drill ?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Yes a 8N will handle a 5ft rotary cutter and a 9" auger on a post hole digger.

Most definatly. It will handle both with ease.

Used our 1946 8N with both just make sure you have a overrun clutch for mower. Also be aware you can't lift post hole digger with clutch disengaged.

Good tip, a overruning clutch is a must.

might want to see if the pto will work with the tractor stationary. i have a 600 it has no problem with a 5' hogg just makes the front a little light, and i also can run a post hole drill with out problems

why wouldn't the 8n's pto work when stationary? it is NOT a ground speed pto. it is a simply non live tranny driven pto.. menaing it spins fine in NEUTRAL, as long as there is no foot resting on the clutch pdeal.

to the OP.

DO use an ORC.

auger is fine.

a 5' or 6' box blade.. 6' can anchor you some times..

angle or crape blades.. 7'

rear scoop 30"

discs. I pull 6.6" dual ganged discs with an 8n.. pulls and lifts them fine. probably could get away with an 8' less agressive pull type leveling disc too.

46 = 2n

earliest 8n was in 47.

My mistake it was my FILs. We don't have the tractor anymore but still have the original manual. It was a 1947 don't know why I said 1946

actual engine year only matters a little. ignition components.. timing checks.. genny stuff.. etc. as any on the 39-52 engines bolt to the front bolster and tranny.

46/47 saw the major revision of the 2n to 8n. decent machines. real easy to work on. I refer the later 53+ and really(55-64) rowcrop machines... but hard to beat a lil N for many jobs.
