Hi All,
All of us who own tractors naturally love to dig, turn up ground and make holes (sometimes for no good reason). I proudly admit when my tractor was new i love to make holes with my backhoe out of boredom and for practice.
I have dug up some weird looking stuff here on the old farm and no clue what it may be. I will post pic here and I think it would be fun to hear other folks digging stories of unexpected finds, hopefully not in the 220 volt range. So lets hear them guys. These seem to me made of hard clay with somthing brittle in the middle

Large buttons? Maybe they are just the base and were covered with some type of upholstery? They look to be large enough for a coat...just a wild guess.

We had a dutch barn put up on the side of a hill. The old owners of our farm had allready levelled the site outbut never got round to put up the barn. The people came in to put the barn up and started digging holes and kept hitting metal things. Like peices of sheet metal 3' or 4' down. Turns out the old owners had burried an old combine harvester under the pad for the barn :p

Two weeks ago, getting gravel from an old stream bed, found a nest of turtle eggs. Left them in a big scoop of gravel and the grand kids are keeping an eye on them until they hatch.

One time while digging up some old logs I came up with a possum in my bucket. I kind of froze when I saw it in there because my brain couldn't comprehend what it was. After a moment, it jumped out of the bucket and took off into the woods.

My biggest suprise was when I took out an oak tree and water shot out into the air. I was well into my land and knew there wasn't a water line there, but that water had some preasure to it and it was crystal clear. It settled down to a steady flowing spring after a few minutes and to my knowledge, several years later, its still flowing. I dug a small 1/4 acre pond to catch the water and sold the land. During two years of drought when everyones ponds were drying up that pond never droped an inch.

Sand pockets have been a suprise. Most of my land is clay with a few viens of iron ore. In one area that I was digging in, I broke through the clay and hit sand. The locals call it sugar sand and I know some people have it all over their property. Kind of odd finding it several feet down.

Those things kinda look like butter molds that I have seen up in Pa.

When we were grading our road a couple weeks ago we found some type of really old looking motor that's full of rust and mud. Also a railroad spike.

My cousin digs graves in most of the rural cemeteries in a nearby county. One day while digging a grave he pulled up a large black trash bag with a human leg in it. After some investigation he learned that it was the leg of someone with a nearby plot that had lost it in a farming accident years prior. The guy was still alive, but his leg had been buried in the wrong plot.

I can't imagine anyone can top that.

Nope, can't beat that, but maybe close. Not me, but my brother-in-law dug up the remains of two horses. (kept the horseshoes BTW  )

So digging up a buried horse isn't particularly strange if it was out in the country on a farm, but this was in a city.

I don't know if i can top it but this is good. Back in 1985 i was working for a general contractor and we were building a new Inn/Hotel. The loam had been scraped up and the existing buildings had either been removed or demolished. There were small piles of loam and dirt scattered here and there. From the first day on the job myself and the other guys had seen small bones around the dirt piles, thought they were chicken, and in some cases deere or larger animal bones.
About eight months into the project the owner of the roofing company we hired was onsite looking around and he picked up one of these bones lying on the ground. He looked at and said it was a human bone. At an earlier part of his life he was premed.
Here is where the fun started. The police were called in, they called in the state police, and they called in the coroner.
After about a week of polking around and digging they found what they were looking for. A small family plot.
It seems that back in the early 1800's this property had been a farm and what we had was the family cemetery. It never showed up on any drawings the city had for the area.
The police said they would try to locate any relatives and rebury the bodies at a local cemetary.

I posted this before, but while digging up an Oak tree about 4' deep, I uncovered this giant grub.
Scared the heck out of me. Reminded me of the movie "Rodan" when it first came out.

13,000 volt power line. Buried loose in the ground, about 4 feet deep alongside a hedge row.
