I'm trying to pick a grapple for the tractor I'm buying. Tractor wise, I'm leaning toward a Kioti DK4510HS. (45HP, 2,660lbs full height lift on loader) The grapple is going to be used to move around brush, rip out vines, move a lot of rocks around, and pull out fallen trees and logs from my woods.

To give some scale, here are some photos:
The rocks that I'm moving Some of them are a bit beyond my tractor, but I'd like to take a go at it.
The sort of stuff I'm ripping out of my woods
The size of trees I had blown over in a recent windstorm

What style and size of grapple should I consider?

Thanks!

I picked up an American Attachments 72" double claw standard duty for $1K. I'm fortunate to live in NC the grapple capital of the US. It only weighs 450# and has worked well for me. These lower cost units are made out of mild steel. Nothing wrong with that but on several instances I have bent the tip of the grapple claw. It is an open design root grapple.

I have a Land Pride rock & root grapple. Its heavy(820#) but I lift BIG rocks, large chunks of pine trees and mountains of brush. Never hurt it. You should also consider some type of brush guard for tractor. View attachment 506584View attachment 506585

Get as narrow and wide opening as you can find.

I agree 100% Narrow but wide. You may want the lower "jaw" to be fairly long for moving brush, but it can be a liability in some cases too, such as grappling rocks. There are tradeoffs to consider.

I have the 50" Compact Wicked Root Grapple from Everything Attachments (For your perspective tractor, you'd have to go up one size to at least the 54" single or dual lid model).

This grapple is an "L shaped" grapple (vs a clam shell style like the new 55 Inch Wicked Root Rake Grapple ) and so far my only "desire" is if it had a wider opening (Sorry Travis). This is more from laziness than outright need however.

I have done everything from moving trees/logs to brush to basketball sized stone. Just this week I was using it to get up the remains of old round hay bales (don't ask - story for another time) and I moved a LOT of hay by using the grapple & a landscape rake to push it up into piles then grabbing large bites out of the pile with the grapple. Would a wider opening have allowed me to just plop down in the pile, take a big bite, and move on? Sure. Instead you have to perfect your technique - I did a lot of "mashing" and then rolling the scoop over onto the pile to get more material per bite. Same thing would apply to brush. (And for what it's worth I was getting enough material that I was maxing out the stability of the tractor for the terrain I was on and no heavier counterweight than a landscape rake anyway).

For the jobs *I* have used the grapple for the only place I see a real advantage of the L shape vs Clam Shell is in moving logs because I am able to pile them up and then get under the pile and carry several at once, everything else I have done would either be advantage clam shell or a draw. Both designs will perform the same jobs, they just work differently and will have strong suits and weaker suits when compared to the other style. At the end of the day a competent operator can accomplish the same jobs with either one, he just has to understand the limitations and alter his approach for the tools he has.

Had the newer clam shell style been available when I purchased, it would have been a very hard decision between the two but I might have ended up with the clam shell style - hard to say. BUT ... I am not "unhappy" enough with the L shape to switch. This one has served me well and I have no doubts it will continue to do so, I just might have to take a few more bites is all.

My advice is to hit YouTube and watch videos of both styles in operation (even if it's on skid steers or heavy equipment) and see how each style operates and the work being done then compare that to your tasks and see which one would suit your needs best.

Either way a grapple is a tractors best friend and you'll enjoy having one.

When you first think about grapples, you tend to think you want something wide to cover the width of your tractor or to support long logs or whatever, but that is incorrect thinking.

Having a wide grapple will support longer logs better if all you are doing is scooping them up and carrying them. If you actually use the grapple and clamp the load in, it really doesn't matter how wide the grapple is, it will hold it.

When you actually start grubbing up roots and rootballs, it isn't difficult to find roots that will stop a large tractor. Look at a stump bucket for a skid steer, they are very narrow, especially the cutting edge. This is so all of the force of the machine gets focused into a small area. It takes a lot of power to dig through roots and stumps. Focusing that power into a smaller area allows the work to get done faster. Spreading that power out across the width of a really wide grapple lessens your ability to do what you want to do.

Digging rocks loose is better with a narrow grapple as well. You can just drive into the rock, clamp on, and suck it right out of the ground. Too wide of grapple and you tear up tons of ground in the process.

My 54" single lid on my 40HP Mahindra 4035 is barely wider than the SSQA carrier on the loader. It would take a 72" to be as wide as the tractor.

The 50" still holds the crown for most popular model because of the strong, lightweight design, but some do choose to go up to the 54" model to gain opening(37" vs 30") like Mr. Sysop did for his rock eating machine!!

LOVE that pic, Sysop!!

Love it so much that I played around with the colors some a while back!

I've seen a couple of my pics cross your facebook page. :)

...and I do make use of the extra opening:

Same rock as before, just picked it up at a better angle for transport.
