About time for me to change the oil in my Massey 1529 for the 1st time (got the 50h service free w purchace). What type/weight oil are ya'll using ? The manual says SAE 30 and 10W 30 in the same column ?This has me confused. Also mentions 15w 40 for warmer climates. I live in NE Indiana where you get hot summers and cold winters. My tractor is garaged and has an engine block heater that I use in the winter months. Any opinions and suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance.

I used Agco Powerlube Multigaurd SAE 15w-40,from the Massey Dealer in my 1529 Hydro. I live in CT and had a pretty mild winter here last year( my first with the tractor). I've been considering going to a synthetic as I have with my smaller gas engines but not sure yet.Make sure you have a BIG oil drain pan!!

10 w30 for year round use. Can use 15W40 during the warmer months. The 30 W reference is showing the manuals age.

5W-40 Rotella because it is handy at WM and good for winter if we have any more. It may have been in my head but it had less rattle than with 15w-40 Rotella but who knows.

Going by the book should be a good option but 5 lower and 10 higher should fuctionally be about the same to the engine in my view.

We run 5W40 during the winter too. Noticed it a lityle quietr, but thought it was in my head also. Will be going with 5W40 on our fall oil change.

Thanks guys. Leaning toward the 5W-40 Rotella. I ran Rotella in my last Duramax. Good oil for Deisel trucks. Should be fine for my Massey also.

As long as the oil meets the OEM SAE viscosity spec and the OEM API classification you can use any brand you want Since you store the tractor inside and have a block heater, in my opinion, you can use 15W40 sucessfully and not have difficulty starting.

I use 15W40 in our diesel tractors here in Western Montana where my tractors are in an open bay machine shed. Both have block heaters and start easy in the winter(Fuel viscosity is a more important factor for me-I need to have winter blend fuel when it's cold). I tried 15W40 (I hoped to be able to standardize on one type of lube oil for all the tractors) in our gas Ferguson TO-30 and it does not have any type of starting aid. It was a bit harder to start than with the 10W40 I normally use so I still use 10W40 in the TO-30.

I'm also considering running a synthetic oil. My reasoning is that since my 1533 is not in a heated building and I have had starting difficulties below -19Celcius, the synthetic would allow easier starting. I wonder however about the pro's/ con's of pure syn. as opposed to syn. blend. (other than price of course). Does anyone have some experience with this. My manual calls for 10w 30 in all weather conditions.
The 15w 40 should only be used where temperatures are above +10 C.

We run full syn 5W40. Won't bother with semi syn as it is somewhat a mystery as to how much syn is mixed with the dino oil. Amsoil makes a 10W30/30 syn diesel oil if you want to stick to that grade,

I bought a jug of 10w 30 mobil 1 but think I got the wrong type.. I don't know what all these numbers mean; ILSAC GF-4 ,, ACEA..... A1/A5,, B1/B5,, API SM,, SL/CF But I realized that this is for a gas engine. I'll have to go to town tomm. to exchange it...
