It's a mnemonic that mechanics use to remind themselves which way to turn the bolt to tighten or loosen it. Learned it from my Dad in the 60's. Or a straight line for a joke. :')))

I learned this from my wife when I was teaching her how to raise and lower the travel trailer stabilizers. I was explaining clockwise / counter clockwise rotation for opposite functions and she snapped I know, righty tighty lefty loosey. I was surprised and amused. Her Dad had taught her.

It means when you have to replace a thermocouple in a water heater, you're going to shear off the bolts that hold the burner in because they are left hand thread meant for specific use in a mobile home and a big box store sold them for use in stick built houses for a few years. Lawsuit ensued. Free burners for all affected!
