Just curious as to why no propane ?

  1. I don't like the tanks.
  2. Propane is expensive.
  3. Don't want to have to deal with the delivery truck.
  4. We heat the house with wood.
  5. My wifey scares the wits out of me when she is in the kitchen as it is. You should see how she messes up my cookware with an electric stove. I don't want to see what she would do to the house with gas. :D
  6. Propane is expense. Did I mention that?

My choice is cast iron.
But mom does most of the cooking at home and she prefers aluminium!

I use cast iron. Various size pans and pots including a 12" dutch oven. I also use copper pots - tinned. We do have a set of copper clad bottom stainless steel. They are getting less use. Our gas(propane) range has a middle cast iron griddle section... so the cast iron pans/pots are used less and less. Up here propane is actually cheaper than electric based on BTU output. A 400 litre tank / 100 gallon costs every two years about $240 - so about $120 a year for propane. I consider this cheap compared to electric. The nice thing is you can cook on the top when the power goes out. Just light with a match.

For health reason, there are great discussions regarding the type of cookware you use. I personally believe using age old cookware gives better flavour - period!

BTW: most of the pots and pans were obtained at yard sales and auctions. Although we(I) did receive a set of Lodge cast iron for our wedding... I guess it was a subtle way of saying "take care of my daughter and feed/treat her well!"

Hard to beat cast iron, especially a big pan full of country ham in the morning. Clean up can be tough after frying lots of ham without some very hot water available.

Just to get off thread a little - Who here can tell me where I could possibly find a cast iron bundt-type pan for baking pound cakes ?

Well! If you have to know....I usually wear my boxers, an old apron and my c'boy boots!:D

Oh! You mean pots and pans!? Yes, my Lodge 10" and 12" ovens with flanged lids will cook some mean chuck!

BTW, below is a link to a site that sells, among other things, dutch oven cookbooks. My favorite is by Sue Cunningham and Jean Cates. Two good ol' Texas gals whose dad was an actual chuckwagon cook.

Also, don't let that guy in the bull horns hat know we're talking cooking on our tractor site or he'll be calling us a bunch of girly, no-gear-jammin' pansies! :)

"Cast Iron" I can tell within 10 minutes if anything in a cream sauce was cooked in aluminum, I'll be sicker than a dog.

Check Amazon for the Lodge dutch oven. I bought a small one a couple of months back for $30 delivered. How they made money on that deal I don't know. The lid can function has a skillet as well.

The lid is the perfect size for making a small batch of corn bread. :D

The dutch oven I got is perfect for making no kneed bread and deep frying.

the only ones I see that can function as a skillet/cover wouldn't be able to hold coals on top for traditional "oven" methods, right?

cast iron is my choice. not the new stuff either. i troll yardsales and fleamarkets for old stuff. ive frying pans from a #4 all the way up to a 16. several dutch ovens griddles muffin tins and even a rimless #10 for cooking pancakes on. love the stuff. a well seasoned cast iron cookpeice is as nonstick(if not better) than a $900 set of calphalon pots and pans we have.

we have propane. 2 of the 100gal(?) tanks at the house and i have 2 40gal tanks at the shop for the gas forge. gas is cheaper than electric i do belive.
