Yeah Lehman seems like the catalog sales! DRAW KNIFE Got one hanging on the wall! Mine come from my DaD! I looked in junk store and found out that U will pay almost same for old ones as new ones! We always called them draw knifes or drawblades! I priced a new one in catalog a while back & I beleive it was around $40.00 and junk store owner wasn't much different! BTW, Brother & I peeled a many of pine post with those drawknifes when we were kids 40/45 yrs ago! DaD would give us a penny a post and we'd have to have a hundred by end of week! (Oh the good ole days, walk 10 miles to school, hehehe)

I bought one off of ebay for $20 about 6 months ago. It is a draw knife. Spoke shaves are much much smaller and wouldn't be as practical for peeling a log. If you are planning on using the log for fence posts, a draw knife would probably work. For larger logs, say for building log homes etc., I would consider first a bark spud. Looks more like a flat ho but heavier duty. You can make a bark spud out of an old leaf spring. While a draw knife would work for peeling, most of what I have READ suggests using a bark spud for initially peeling a big log, then the draw knife is used for cleaning up and smoothing. I have not actually used either of them. Both are available from several online sources. I have some links somewhere and will try and find them this afternoon.

As others have said, I think you're talking about a draw knife, but I would point out that a draw knife is called that because you draw it toward your stomach as you cut with it, usually while the item being trimmed is caught in a shaving horse (the dumb head). It's really not an appripriate tool for debarking. It's actually a delicate work tool, though you can hog off a lot of wood quickly if you know how to use one. As others have said, I would look at the tools made specifically for debarking trees.

That is exactly what I was looking for!
I will chek out Ebay and also look into the item that was described to go on the end of a chain saw. I want to make some posts for some out buildings.

Drawknife? Spokeshave? Don't anyone laugh, but I think what you need is called a scorp. If my memory is any good, they look like an oversized drawknife. Not a clue on where to get one though.
