What do the letters mean in the ford models?

Looking at a 655C locally.....what does the "C" mean??

Series 6555 then a reverse 'C'

Serial AB08447

Backhoe 18-055

Just trying to decipher the info to see what year, etc this one is.

Any help would be appreciated.

The letter code is part of the models normally. The original, A, B, C, D, E,

Does that imply a year? Or a level or grade of tractor?? Different options?

I think it's based on the date of manufacture. Different runs or series will get a different letter designation, beginning with "A". They'll run a particular series for a number of years then update a few things for the next series. Still the same basic unit, but with a few upgrades which don't warrant a complete model change.

Yup, the letters just imply a newer/updated model. So the C is newer than an A. For some reason, Ford never made a 655B.

As for the year, there should be a date code on the tag. Should be #a##a. If you post it, someone will decipher the exact build date

Ford uses letter for a particular model so that vehicle is identified uniquely. They give Vehicle Identification Number to each model. Except I, O, Q as it clashes with 1 and 0.
