Mowed part of our 9 acre "lawn" last evening. The A/C sure beats the ZT.

Yesterday I learned a valuable lesson on my LS tractor. I was hauling bucket loads of gravel down my driveway to try to patch it up after the rains. I had no rear ballast on the tractor and at some point, for some reason, I took it out of 4wd. I headed down the drive (fairly steep), and the next thing i know the tractor was gaining speed fast. Usually it will stop dead on the hill if I'm not leaning on the forward pedal, not this time. Luckily I only panicked for a second before my brain kicked in and dropped the loader to the ground and the tractor stopped. Moral of the story is no more loader work without ballast on for this guy!

Rear ballast will help prevent the machine from tipping forward with a full bucket, lifting the rear wheels off the ground. It won't help prevent runaway down a slope with or without a bucket full.

It wasnt that the brakes didnt work or the tranny wasnt holding it back. I just had no weight on the back end for breaking ability. The tires were just sliding on the gravel.

Rear weight is never a bad idea, but 4WD on slopes is almost essential. I can't run my hills at all without 4WD, load or not.

I always keep 4x4 on unless I'm on a hard surface or using high gear traveling very far because if forget to put in 4x4 it can be too late when its needed especially when it rains here!

What are you using for ballast and do you have your tires filled or not?

At minimum everyone should have rear tires filled with ballast liquid or foam I'm a fan of the foam it makes such a difference in stability and makes tires bulletproof for damage its twice as expensive as liquid depending on where you live but when you use loader a lot you notice the difference in front tires and can basically drive tractor till it loses all the tread and when you find the screwdriver that your son lost in the field with your tire all you do is pull it out and check to see if the screwdriver is still straight lol
