Re: What can\'t you throw away?

Well since you asked, since I was 8or9 Ive been going to junkyards with dad and brother for tractor and truck parts. So Its deep bred into me that I collect things. WHen i was 14 I picked up welding and machining and I was set then. Any peice of nice usable Iron, gearboxes wheels axles transmissions, pumps hydraulic motors and all got to the back of the property and live in an old storage van. About the time i went to welding dad changed dirt moving jobs to run the land Fill for a mobile home plant. WHen the tool room dumpster came out it had bits and Makita cordless drills they chunked. They had a policy that if it was a newer dril and it was minor like a chuck or battery a 2 minute fix save it. They didnt want a 12 dollar and hour hand spending 2 hours on a drill. Id fix them afte school and sell them an use various bearings out of them. I still have about 250 of them.
I use alot of industrial things in my fabrication shop and having these items help. I was oer at a truck shop saturday after 12:00 and they roll up the sidewalks here. THe mechanic need 2 left handthread lugnuts for the truck,1 sealed beam taillight 3.5 inches diameter and a pig tail for the trailer. I told him to wait aminute and I came home and dug in one parts box. The fella was amazed that he didnt have to wait till monday to get parts.

Re: What can\'t you throw away?

The rummage sale or yard sale doesn't work as intended most of the time, the stuff that doesn't sell goes back in the garage. Box up the stuff and take it to the flea market. While you are there dumping, er, selling stuff, scope out some of those folks that make a career of flea market selling. When you get bored and hot and tired go to them and have them give you an offer on everything else you have left. I've came out pretty well doing that, I've taken $20 to $100 for the rest of my junk. The time I came up with a hundred for my booth I knew the guy knew something I didn't know about something I had, that kind of bothered me at first, but all the junk was gone and that was the object of the mission. You have to maintain self control when you're dumping junk at the flea market or you'll come home with more than you hauled out. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: What can\'t you throw away?

Great way of getting help, Garry! I'll have to try that!

My wife is also a packrat. And of course all of her spoils go into the bottomless pit of the garage. Old packing boxes from computers that were replaced years ago. The bicycle she rode across the country in 1981. Heavy drapes she hated and are now full of mouse nests anyway. Stuff like that. I used to announce I was cleaning the garage, and as fast as I pulled stuff out of the back she'd carry it back in the other side!

So now, thanks to Clementine and her wonderful backhoe, I start cleaning by digging a deep hole. Non-burnable junk goes into the hole and gets buried. If she wants it that badly she can help clean...or did it up later! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maybe that's why she missed that last fox with the 12ga and pockmarked the side of my backhoe! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

You got that right! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We did go that route one time - Never Again! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Like you said, thanks to the wife, we came home with more "stuff" (her definition - not mine! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif) than we went with. From that time on, whatever didn't sell (or wasn't given away - I told you, I don't keep stuff around!), we donate to anyone or any organization that will take it.

I've even been known to follow along behind the wife and reduce the prices she puts on items. Like I said - I WANT THAT STUFF OUTTA THERE! Whatever it takes! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: What can\'t you throw away?

Yep Dave, that reminds me. My wife is a bit thrifty and declines to throw stuff out for her own reasons. We have ketchup and Mustard from the 90's and spices from the 80's.

Care for a beer? We don't drink, but we bought some to be polite to guests. Just can't seem to remember when we bought it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: What can\'t you throw away?

Every time I throw away even the smallest piece of old rusty pipe, I need it the following week. So now, I throw almost nothing away. Some things wait for years but they come in handy! I have the same problem on the beer. Don't drink it but buy it for guests. I finally had someone drop buy and gave them one and they spit it out. Old and flat apparently. Now my guests drink what I drink!
