I wanted to know what is safe to add to fuel filter when system is gelled. I have been told atf works wonders on a gelled fuel system! This may be true on older equipment but I wouldn't think about adding atf to a newer engine with a smaller injection port and much higher pressure fuel system.

Would winter additive such as power service be okay to add in the fuel filter? Maybe kerosene or diesel 911?

Maybe only fresh blended diesel should be used or a mix of diesel fuel and additive.

I would like a scenario for older engines that are mechanically ran and also new engines.

From what I know diesel 911 is only supposed to be used on a badly gelled diesel fuel system. Is this only to be added into the fuel tank? I have heard of people using diesel 911 in engines with worn injectors. It will lower the ignition temperature for easier starting when old injectors cannot atomize their fuel mixture as effiecently

Fill the filter with 911 . Throw some in the tank and your set. Treat all of your fuel with power service and leave the gelling problems behind.

Power Service is one brand of fuel conditioners and rescue products. Howe's, Wellworth, and probably others are out there and work well. Power Service 911 is probably the most recognized and commonly available rescue product, but is no more or less effective than others. Wellworth Icebreaker is the rescue treatment I happen to sell along with Summit fuel conditioner. Both products are very good but not as widely recognized.

If it's gelled, best thing is to warm up the fuel filter until the engine gets warm enough to keep it that way.

About 0.15% of fuel additive will work, IF you can get it mixed throughout the tank. About 1/3 to 1/2 volume of kerosene will mix more readily.

My diesel generator started on its bi-weekly schedule on Thursday. It'd been in single digits at night and not much more than 20 during the day. I have its fuel dosed with the white bottle of fuel service.

You could try a hair dryer on it. We use 911 and have had good results at a reasonable price. We do as suggested before replace frozen filter with one that is full of 911 when tractors are gelled.

If you have a spare filter, put some anti-gel (any brand) in it and mix with 50%diesel and install, treat your equipment fuel tank with adequate amount of anti-gel agent to prevent further gelling. If the old filter is not due to be changed, put it somewhere warm, above 90F and the wax will return to suspension and the filter can be reused (for next freeze up) IF you would treat your fuel tank with anti-gel before cold weather hits, you shouldn't have any problems. I bought my first anti-gel product ever (Howes) in my 64 years of life running diesels a couple weeks ago. It doesn't normally get cold enough here to cause gelling and my RTV was running ok, but to be on the safe side, I dosed my RTV and B26tanks with a generous slug of Howes. This should carry me thru the winter on one tank of fuel. I don't even know if we get summer and winter blend fuels here, but for sure my storage tank was filled in the summer so it is summer blend. So far this year has been the coldest ever for me (at least in Arkansas)at low of +12F.

I have always pondered the idea of making a heat exchanger that uses cooling water to heat Disel before it comes to the filter. Only reason I have not tried yet is that the tractor I use in the winter is air cooled

Most gel ups occur before the engine reaches operating temp.

All the jet airplanes I have flown, jet fuel is basically kerosene, use a oil to fuel heater that kicks in around 35 deg.

Racor makes such a product: filter w. heater, hot water or 12v elec. [e.g., Racor 690R Diesel Fuel Filter 12 Volt Heater Spinon Element 12v Heating 690R1230]; and Parker makes 12v inline fuel heaters Heaters - Diesel Fuel, Coolant
