What are these brackets on the bottom rung of a stepladder for?

These brackets are on the bottom rung of a Werner fiberglass platform two sided stepladder. They are able to be slid across the rung, and their are two of them on each rung (4 total). What is their purpose?

They may have been used to hold the ladder shut during shipping.

Maybe to stop it from swinging open while carrying it.

My guess is to keep from getting your fingers pinched between the legs when closing it.

except they don’t hook or connect to each other, so they do nothing to prevent the ladder from opening.

They do perhaps stop the ladder from closing too tightly, but only if they are slid into positions directly across from each other.

Option for an extra wide step? Does a 2x4 fit?

edit: Doesnt say on Werner's site, and when the question was brought up on Home Depot they were simple told to call Werner's CS.

What are the 2 metal things on each bottom step for ?
2 metal hook like things on each bottom step .Can they be removed ?

The part that you are referencing is used as a spacer. The purpose of this spacer it to prevent the side rails from slamming into each other.

Pinch proof..oh brother. In 40+ years on working with ladders on the job i cant recall a single time i pinched myself on a ladder.

i think you could stack ladders together using those clips to reach 110’ high
