Ran across this foot and part of a leg a few days ago behind my camp. A pack of Timber Wolves visits the area on occasion and I'm guessing they had lunch out of whatever this is. The long toes/fingers tell me it's not a Bear cub, Racoon or Skunk (All 3 should still be in hibernation), I could be wrong. I've got an idea of what it may be, but curious to see if anyone has any thoughts on it. I set it on an old fence post for the picture. Didn't want to take it, because if it's what I think it might be, they are illegal to hunt, trap, possess in any form. Any Wildlife Biologists on the Board (Degreed or School of Hard Knocks)?

GRUMPA - My guess is along that line. I'm guessing it's a Fisher. They are in the Wolverine family. They restored them to this area quite a few years ago. Have seen two different ones in my camp area and this might have been the big black one. They are pretty ferocious (like the Wolverine) - keep an eye on my docile Lab OTTO when I have her in the woods with me, but then I usually carry also, but haven't had any problem. I worry more about the Timber Wolves getting her (they've taken quite a few hunting dogs, when the dogs get into their areas). I respect the Grey Wolf and have no problem with them - Beautiful animal.

Why not notify the Department of Natural Resources and let them know about what you have found. I am certain that they can tell the differance between an animal that was killed by a hunter and one taken by another animal. Did you see any blood or any other body parts????

Is anyone trapping in that area? Never heard of let alone seen a 'Fisher'. Anyone have a pic of a live one?

Thanks,

I lost a great cat to a fisher a few years back, and nearly lost Nasdaq (our big black cat) last winter. I was able to track it in fresh snow after the second attack and shot it in the woods. Nasty customers! The pelt looked pretty nice where the .35 Rem hadn't shredded it. Pete
