Growing up my grandad rode around on his Farmall with a shotgun. He shot everything in site. One day I was playing in his front yard, I was about 5, he says "Quick! Pull this bush back!"...soon as I did BOOM! he shot a rabbit. Thinking back too darned close to me!

Did the roar sound more like an African lion or a scream?

Hard to explain...a very deep sort of a roar, lots of air volume.
I listened to several YouTube recordings and this one at start is very close...

I used to be a dog man until I met my wife who had cats. All animals are intelligent in their own way. Some cats, especially males seem to more variety of things.

In the 2nd picture its not even 2 wires tall on that fence. It's coyote sized at best. Go stick a yardstick back in the shadows where it was and take a repeat picture from the original spot.

I'll try that when I get time. It had a wider snout and more rounded ears. It slinked along low except once when it looked at me. It could be a mix? I won't bother it. I've never hunted, as long as I'm not bothered, horse, cats, I don't bother it. Outdoor cats have it made in evening, nothing could get to them. They cross one gazebo to another by a tunnel.
All my time is spent working on horse barn.
