What alternator should I replace my old one with?

Hey y'all,

I have a Yanmar ym2000bd and I need to replace the alternator and I am wondering what brand I should use. I have look into it a bit but just wanted to see what people with more experience say.

Best to ask in the Yanmar thread because this is so specific. The Yanmar alternators have to be a certain type, basically a Datsun from the mid to late 70s. There are several dozen threads on this topic too. Both Hoye & Fredricks offer these. OE maker was Hitachi and Denso. Desno is still making them.

It gets even more interesting since your machine ends in BD. So asking in the right place will get you the right answer. The "B" units were very specialized types for certain customers in Asia.

If you have a starter / alternator repair shop local to you start there. They may be able to repair or rebuild it. They may also suggest a less expensive alternative to the original. Many use a GM alternator with internal voltage regulator but you will probably have to build a new bracket as alignment may not be the same as the original.

no no no, not on a "B" type machine, no GM alternator would work. Only the specialized Datsun made by Denso. This isn't a Mitsubishi by any means.

Yea the ym2000bd is the Japanese version of the ym240. I have also seen that the Datsun was the go to option for this model as well. Thank you for the replies
