What about buying a Case 444 sitting in somebody's weeds, semi-disassembled?

I'm new here. Have caught this Ingersoll Tractor fascination. Wife's widowed Aunt has a 1989 3010 with RM38 mower. A few years ago I got new spindles for the mower and have had to have the mower deck welded a couple times but I have come to love this thing and I want one for my place too. I have found a Case 444 sitting in the weeds on a farm 10 miles from here. It's in pieces and he wants
$300 the way it sits. Has a 44" mower deck with it. I'm thinking I'll buy it and if it costs too much to repair ( I don't know what it needs: engine, pump, hydraulic motor, wiring harness?) I'll keep it for parts and start looking for another? I haven't checked the serial number yet. If I cannot come up with a decent used Case or Ingersoll in the 14 to 20 hp range I may have to bite the bullet and see if I can get a new one. What sweet machines!
