That may be what's been protecting us. I have a bunch of power surge strips left over from our old business. I've been using them as multi outlet plugs.

Jerry,

Is that something that can be put in at the meter base or breaker box to cover the entire house?

in my younger days, i loved to watch the lightning, and say, awwwwwwww, job security......now i just love to watch..and dread any damage...but i have to admit...there is much less damage than there use to be...because of all the protection i have installed on the equipment.

Yes Gary,
You can get them for the whole house, as in the post below yours. Leviton, SquareD and others make them.

Cindi,
We just had a whopper up here in NY. I'm sure it wasn't up to Florida standards, but there was a lot of washing out of road edges, and trees down. Unfortunately, a beautiful birch fell on my 'bota. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Oh well, the tractor is about 20-25 years old, and it just creased the hood. I'll beat it out this weekend, and it probably won't even affect the value on a tractor that old.

Now my wife wants some of those deer made out of birch logs! Maybe I can talk dad into......

great site..i started using panamax protectors a long time ago, and i can say that i have not lost a single piece of equipment that i have protected with their equipment..their faxmax is one of the main ones i use..for all sorts of equipment..it has an internal 30 amp fuse that gets blown on occasion, but the equipment survives.

A couple things to note on those plug in protectors.

1) The larger the number of Joules the better the protection.

2) Make sure you get those that disconnect the power when spent.
The biggest problem I've seen with the ones that don't is that
people think they're protected because they never look at the
indicator lamp.

3) get one for your phone extensions especially if you have
cordless phones and most especially for your modem.

In this day and age of electronics everywhere from your microwave and phones to your TV and PC it just seems to make more sense to buy one unit and not worry about which circuit is protected and which one isn't. I guess I think it's probably cheaper this way, too. Would this work on phone lines, too?

gary , don't think it would protect the phone lines /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif, i know when it is stormng bab , i disconnet the computer and the phone line to it, just to be safe,
