.....the fourth of July doesn't have anything on what happened around here this afternoon. A storm blew up, you could see it coming for miles, gray ribbons of rain falling out of a sky almost purple black. It was obvious it was going to be a bad one. Fred and I looked at each other simultaneously.

"We'd best go feed before the bottom falls out." He said. I nodded.

We started out moving calmly and smoothly despite the fact that the wind had kicked up to thirty mile an hour gusts. Chickens were blowing around the yard like empty paper bags. The lightning and the thunder were coming pretty quick by the time we got all the pigs fed and had moved on to the goats. We were both running around like hunchbacks, trying to present smaller targets for the lightning.

"Cut the water on!" Fred yelled, so that he could top off the goats water tub. I did. Bout that time lightning struck so close it shook the ground.

"Cut the water OFF!" Fred yelled again. "To heck with 'em, their fixin' to get all the water they can use!"

He tossed the hose and came running across the pasture, his knuckles practically dragging the ground. I almost laughed out loud, he looked like something straight out of planet of the apes.

We made it in the house just as the big drops started falling. It didn't matter which window you looked out of, which direction, there was lightning streaking from sky to ground all around us. I don't know what kept us from getting hit. As scary as it was, it was still beautiful.

And here for all of these years I've thought I was the only one who wanted to stand outside on a porch and watch the lightning. I think it's one of the most beautiful sights in nature. I know it's probably dangerous, but I'm like a moth drawn to the flame.

I love to watch it, but I have heard too many horror stories about people getting hit with a wicked right hook or a curve ball from lightning. You know, sitting in a chair across the room from a window and whammy! Here in Florida we have balls of lighning that will pass right thorugh your house.

Cindi,

I agree with you wholeheartedly. It is terribly dangerous and I am neither recommending anyone do what I do nor condoning the actions of any who do as I do.

I know lightning is terribly dangerous and that I shouldn't do what I do. I just can't explain it but when it's happening I can't tear myself away from watching it.

Cindi, you need to write a book. You have such a talent for writing. As few times as I respond to your posts, I do none the less enjoy reading them. Titles for some books for Cindi.

1. Simple Folk
2. Whew, what next?
3. Ain't life grand.

Well, OK, you pick the title, but to me, you have replaced Erma Bombeck, God rest her soul. Rat...

Maybe more like 'simple-minded folk'. Hah! Normal people would have waited til the storm blew in and OUT before going out there. But, hey, we havta get our excitement somewheres. We're old.

Thanks Rat. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

nah! you ain't the only wacko out there /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif i often sit in the garage when it is storming and just watch the light show. one of the most beautifuls sights i ahve seen is when standing at the lip of the grand canyon, just as dark was approching, and a tremendous storm appered over the canyon, it was almost constant lighting. was just beautiful! just stood ther in the rain, and was totally awed. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

ain't those electrical storms grand...up at our house the mtn or hill to some. tends to split the storms and we have 2 or 3 , 1000' tv towers to the E and W of and we love to sit on the back deck and watch the show as the storms strike time after time on the towers ( o' there a good 5ml away). I to know even thats risky but it's just so darn hard not to watch... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

We have been dodging bullets for I don't know how long. So far we've never lost a thing to lightning although my neighbor lost ALL her electronics last year.

Cindi,
A TVSS(Transient Voltage Surge Suppressor) will stop that from happening to you.
