$40 on an antenna and expecting good results is like expecting to spend $50 for a new 55 inch 4K definition TV.
A Winegard HD7698P locates 30ft in the air with an antenna mounted pre-amp, a rotor and low loss RG-6 cable will bring in every network from your location. TV Fool

I pay $92 a month for my Dish Network and I think it's worth every penny. I can spend that on one night out at a restaurant and a movie easily. I watch a lot more TV in the winter time than I do summer, it's pretty cheap entertainment.

I cut the cord 2 years ago. I have good internet service. I signed up with Amazon prime, Netflix and I pay $15 per month for the HBO app. Plus I have a rooftop antenna.

Costs me $300 per year. Took a little time to adjust but now I could never go back to paying over $100 per month for crappy satellite.

Works for me but I am not an avid sports fan.

If I do want to see a game I just go to the local wing joint sports bar.

Oodles of channels to watch with a modest outdoor antenna . TV Fool

My sister and brother-in-law had Hughesnet for several years. It was dreadful, but it was their only option at the time. They had to make sure their PCs downloaded patches, updates, etc. only happened at night to make sure they did not get FAP'd.

I have direct TV, it's in bundle in Century Link, Internet, landline, direct TV. Can't complain about reliability of system, and the interface on Direct is hands down the best. How the controller and menus interface are important to me. Nothing drives me more crazy when display says press cancel and the remote has no cancel button. That type of stuff. Like Windows crap, press start to finish.... I wasn't surprised when I found out Direct TV hired Apple to design software interface. Lol.

We've about had it with broadcast television. $125 a month for satellite TV and 95% is cr@p but we watch it anyway out of inertia. Worse, I'm forced to pay for programming that I detest funding and yet it's part of a forced package that insults anyone's intelligence. Our Internet speed is fast enough that we can go with a few programs on a HULU or something like that and pick up the local news networks on our TV if we want.

The possibilities of available time are endless. More seat time. More barn time. Wax the truck. More exercise and doing things for us that have a net benefit on the outcome of our lives. What's wrong with that?

I'm the OP on this and here's how things ended up. We kicked satellite TV to the curb, went with a 60 mile over-the-air antenna and 100% love it. Free programming. When we started watching a few years back we had about 15 channels. We now get around 40 and more keep popping up. You get old reruns of programs and things that were great over the last 10 to 60 years. Best, that $125 a month monkey is off my back.

Now, if you want to watch current, impossible to believe pretend programming, OTA TV is not for you. You'll have to keep subscribing to the satellite thing. But for me, I watch what I want and spend the free time doing all the things I never had time for. It is so much better. Plus, in threeyears I saved at least $4,500 --WOW--that is about to buy me a dump trailer.

YMMV--but likely not by much.

Had to look up YMMV - I’m not much of a text abbreviation person.

Learned something new already today. Still on first cup of coffee.

Glad you found what works for you.
