Wet brake replacement

What did I get myself into? I bought a used Jinma 454 for (I think) a good price. But it looks like it needs new brakes.

Is this an all-winter project tearing the rearend apart? Can I even do it myself? My neighbor says I have to take it into a shop. If so, any rough estimates on the cost? Any other advice?

I haven't personally done wet brakes, but I've split tractors before to do clutch packs and transmission work. Whether you could do it yourself depends on your mechanical aptitude, and your availability of tools. If you have decent mechanical ability, a relatively smooth concrete work surface, and decent tools you should be able to do the work yourself. You'd need decent jackstands, blocks of wood to support, a decent floor jack or two, and an engine hoist or chain hoist off the ceiling to support the axle housings.

Are you sure that that Jinma has 'wet' brakes?

erj, yes. the manual says they wet and the neighbor/farmer showed me the difference on his tractors.

jb, I was looking good until you said, "hoist". Dang. Well, I have a steel frame, about 7' tall, and a comealong. but then I would have to work around the frame. Hmmm.
