I thought Cali had blackouts or is it more of a regional thing?

Cali has blackouts and Cali has blackeyes from Pacific Graft & Extorsion (PG&E)... A company more worried about what they are worth on stock market than providing service to its rate payers....
Its only 104° here to day and hoping like hell they can maintain power.... Generator only runs well and refrigerator so I may have to strip down and play in sprinkler... Think whole house GENERAC (22kw) system may be in our future..... Neighbor has 22kw system the ram 8 maybe 9 day solid on propane when we had Oak fire a few weeks ago...

Here in Nevada City the prediction for this coming Saturday is 86°, dropping to 78° a week from now.
I'm going to beat the rush and get my winter gear dry cleaned tomorrow! Gotta make sure the furnace is ready to go. 😐

We have a lot of power outages in the Rocky Mountains. So we've had several generators.
I should point out that if you use a generator a lot, you probably also have a backup generator....

The main decisions that affected our choice:

1. What type of fuel? We don't have natural gas here.
2. Do we really need 220V during an outage or will 110V do?
3. Open frame type or enclosed type
4. Electric start or pull start
5. Automatic start and transfer switch or manual?
6. Battery backup & inverter?

I think we tried all combinations in our six generators so far.
Two sizes of gasoline pull start Honda generators. Both 110V only. A 2KW & 3.5KW
One commercial welding generator - gasoline 110/220 7.5KW (Miller )
Two sizes of propane powered Generacs from Home Depot: 7.5KW 110V only & 110/220 15KW.

All manual transfer switch or just extension cords on the Hondas.
We never did try any of the open framed screamers - all of these are quieter and inclosed
Never did try a full automatic transfer switch or battery backup & inverters. Someday, maybe.
Have not tried diesel. Frankly it just gets too cold here to reliably start a diesel.

Every one of these generators worked fine and did the job. All different, but no real complaints.
Right now we are using the propane powered 15KW Generac from Home Depot.
Reading the thread and chuckling to myself a bit. If you want clean power (kind of like buying lubricants and filters for your tractor. when you buy with your wallet paramount, you won't do well in the long run).

We have a Generac 35KW diesel fired (John Deere turbo diesel) standby and cold weather don't impact it at all as it has a built in block warmer and starting battery maintainer warmer plus it exercises weekly and assumes the entire load (120-240 1 and 3 phase) within 45 seconds of utility drop out and I don't do a dam thing, it does it all and it's plumbed into my 500 gallon farm diesel tank. Very quiet and low harmonic distortion and at 1800 rpm, it's not a chainsaw either. Was it cheap. Nada. Cheap and quality don't fit well together. Just like oil and filters. Owned it for 10 years now and other than annual oil changes and new new starting battery and one air filter change I forget it's even there... until the power goes out that is.

I believe I have about 10K in it, professionally installed by a certified electrician and 100% permitted too.

10K is chump change in the dead of winter when the power goes out, out here in rural America.

If you want reliability and power, expect to pay for it. There ain't no portable generators that are worth beans far as I'm concerned.

Even had the electrician install a set of lights on the corner of the shop so I can see the run status without going outside.

I have a small Champion Inverter I carry in the RV but it's only for the RV. Nice little (emphasis on little) genny.
