Always will consider West by God Virginia home, and still spend alot of time in the state for some outdoor activities.

Usually go up I-77 into the state from N.C.

Well, had to run up to Pa. real quick, going up I-81 from Virginia.

Almost fell over dead when I saw the state welcome sign.

"West Virginia, now open for business"??!!!

What happened to "Wild, Wonderful"?!

I always thought that western Md should be annexed (sp?) by W.V and eastern W.V should be taken over by Maryland. Guess this just proves it!

I never seen that sign you are talking about...its not on the Ohio/WVa border as of yet.Not where I cross into Ohio and back.

Where do you cross the border?
I cross it on I 77.

Most likely has to do with "Corridor H", they have been working on extending Interstate 66 from around Front Royal, VA over to Interstate 79. Have a couple friends with property along the corridor, property values have been going up quite a bit. Going to make more of West Va accessible to the DC/NOVA suburbs.

I cross the border at Belpre....about the only time I cross on I-77 is when I am going to get parts for my JD.

Seems I can recall a song;

"West Virginia almost heaven"

Yes Egon, almost Heaven was another "slogan" (pertaining to the "beauty" of the state) perhaps excluding/overlooking the industrial or lack of (coal areas) of the S.W part of the state that borders Ky /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I'll be the first to admit that there can be some pretty scarey (sp?) areas /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

That one surprises me about the license plate.

I had also thought that if a state changed its "welcome sign" in one area, it did so at all "gateways" to the state.

May not seem like an issue to many, but too me, I loved the areas of the state so much that I asked to be transfered there (W.V) which had alot of people scratching thier heads wondering why I would want to go to W.V. within my company.

There are some other areas on the east coast that can come close to rugged (sp?) beauty (western N.C which boarders Tn/Ga and those two states as well, upstate Maine, Vermont and some others), but W.V seemed to have a fierce (sp?) independent mentality (one other state that comes to mind is Texas) with all the "locals" I've known. I realize that W.V can be the brunt of many jokes, but it has some of the most down to earth friendly people that I've come across.

I've always known W.V as the "Wild, Wonderful" state, and "open for business" just seems like the state is selling it's "soul" for some Md and D.C business.

I know exactly what you mean...
I've interviewed for a couple jobs in the eastern panhandle lately. It's not my father's West Virginia anymore, and I decided paying double for comparable real estate from what we're paying now just to live in West Virginia just isn't for us.

I knew there would be a population boom, but didn't realize it would happen this quickly!

It seems our wonderful governor is trying to turn WV into something that it is not instead of focusing on what it does have. As far as the eastern panhandle, it is definitely turning more into northern VA and Maryland, but WV will never let it go as the eastern panhandle pretty much finances the rest of the state. They are killing us with property taxes. It's pretty sad when people who were born here in the eastern panhandle cannot afford to buy a home because the prices have increased so much due to VA, MD, & DC people moving in. I'm glad I got my house before the huge boom started. The friendliness that you find everywhere else in the state is leaving the panhandle in a hurry. Everyone is in a hurry and very rude.
I can't wait to get back to visit Preston County and get back to true WV where the people are down home and really friendly.
