Went and looked at Rotary Mower

I went to my dealer and looking at Rotary Mowers. We sat down after he showed me what he had to offer and discussed them. We ended up looking at the Befco RSD 48" for my friend and the Befco RSD 60" for me. The thing about befco is they a heavy duty units. They come with a sheerpin but you can upgrade to a slip clutch later. It is a kit that cost $100.00. I think that the Befco is a very nice unit. The 48" cost 775.00 and I forget the price on the 60". My friend had to wait because the 48" he had in stock was sold. I am going to wait for him to get his so I can see how it works out. I've had a Befco 60" RFM for two years now. It was about a year or so old when I bought it (package deal with the tractor).
They're nice...not a rotary cutter though, so don't use it as such.
Maintenance is pretty easy....grease the wheel spindles and pulleys after a couple mowings and clean off the build up grass underneath every now and then (at least at the end of the mowing season).
My tractor has a non-live PTO, so if I step on the clutch, the PTO (and mower) stop. I think this may accelerate belt wear. I have replaced the belt once. Not too bad a job...do suggest you use anti-sieze on the cover bolts if you have to do any assembly or disassembly.

An over-run clutch will help some with belt wear.

Look for a Fred Crain. It'll cut brush up to 1" easily and I've cut some 2" stuff with mine. They use the same blades as Bush Hog brand cutters and use the same gearbox. I got mine new 2 years ago for $500 here in Ashland, Ky. Not sure where you live but over 7 bills for a rotary mower is a bit much in my book. I think the Bush Hog brand was around $650 when I got mine.
