:dance1:hi everyone this is #4 just got this one and i will be restoring this one over time as some of you may know i have done 3-other ones. that i have sold all ready. the first(blue was a mtd 990 1980 model)-#2( was a green wizard 990 1976 model)#3( was a vary rare firestone fairlawn 990 1973 model) yes all were made by mtd and all are 990 these tractor were sold in places like jc penny.firestone tire.westen auto stores and more they were sold under lots of names like wizard,daytona,fairlawn,farmboss and more.this one here is a 1982 mtd 990 in really ruff shape. i will be going slow but it will get done if you have one please send picture and tell us your story about it.like my blue i added electronic ingtion and it was one of the best running tractor.and it had a lot of power. here some start picture lets see yours :thumbsup:
tom it been back in 2008-2009 that i did my convertion i used a mega-fire ignition/points convertion.i'm sure you could use nova if you wanted.mega-fire works good because you don't need to repolerize the flywheel if you don't get spark one way just reverse the wires.i wanted to keep it easy and cheap so i just used the stock coil (298698)now i tryed lots of different air gaps. plugs, and craberator setting in the end. heres what worked good for me i set the coil air gap at .9 plug champ-j8 gap at 44. crab 2-turns out.thats what i remeber off the top of my head.if you google electronic ignition mtd 990 you should be able to find my blogs from 2008-2009 but i don't think i ever finsh them but i will this time lots of poeple ask me about it coil air gap plug and carb setting get it right and it will run great.note when i start a restore project i allway replace head,carb gaskets start with a clean carberator no air leaks new air cleanner stock setting to start with stock. champ plug. j19lm plug is junk it get to hot and is to small for this big motor champ j8:thumbsup: good. good luck
