I'm welding up some brackets for a loader and some people have told me that I have to be careful that I don't fry electrical components and arc the bearings in the motor.
Is there any truth to this?
I'm using an AC stick welder. My original plan was to tack them in place and remove them for most of the welding, keeping the ground close to where I'm welding.
I don't want to find out the hard way so I figured I would ask the experts.
(Most of the electrical components aren't cheap)

Keep the ground VERY close to where you are welding and only tack it in place. Don't do full welding!.

That said, I wouldn't do it. I used to be a maint tech at a forging plant and we would always take whatever we could off the press when possible to do repairs.

We did weld a lot of the repairs in place though and we had tens of thoudands of dollars in electronics on the presses. I can't think of a single time it fried something. That was on that companies property though, not my 5, 10, or 20 thousand dollar tractor.

Good luck

It is not a problem just attach your ground to the steel not the tractor. We have welded hundreds of brackets in place and have never had or seen one problem. If you hook the ground to the PTO shaft that might be a different story.

These guys have it spot on. So long as the electrical system and bearings are not part of the circuit, then you won't have a problem. It's when you connect the ground to the battery terminal or the pto shaft that you'll run into problems. Besides, the ground won't work through a painted surface anyways.
