Welding cast iron with UTP 85 FN

I have a broken mounting flange on the rear end of my Gibson tractor, I was going thru my rod and I have some of what I think is Nickel but its unmarked, then I have some UTP 85 FN.

My question is, can I machine the UTP 85 FN? I know that some of the lower nickel content rods cannot be machined but I can't find any info on the UTP 85 FN.

Cast iron welding is a science on its own, carbon content is such a unknown variable. Don't know many guys who come right stick welding this stuff. Some guys reckon a good pre-heat, hammer peening between runs and post weld heat/slow cooling. Weld preps should be chisel chipped or rotary burred instead of abrasive ground, grinding produces tiny heat and stress cracks. For my money a brass oxy-fuel weld is the way to go. We get a bronze rod over here and I have had better results with this than brass rod. Again, good preheat and post weld slow cooling will machine ok.

Eutectic makes a copper alloy arc brazing rod that I have had good results with in the past on CI and putting dissimilar metals together such as brass to steel and copper to SS. Welding distributors don't normally stock but they can get it. I haven't bought any for years so not sure what the minimum order may be now. Years ago it was popular and stocked locally. I will look up on the net and post the data.

certanium 760 is excellent for such work, as far as machining, as long as the porosity is low, correct penetration and stringer run, dont see why not
