Welding advice

I was wondering is 7014 might be a better choice as there is no embrittlement issue but again I am not a welder hence my reaching out. At this point I am a Google welder :)
I did some fillet weld break tests. 7014 broke with 10-blows from a 4-pound hammer. 7018 that never seen the inside of a rod oven broke with 18-blows from a 4-pound hammer. 7018 right out of the rod oven broke with 23-blows from a 4-pound hammer.

I find 7014 is more of a fast weld rod, still strong, DC 7018 is more of a penetrating rod which in turns makes it a stronger, but if one only has an AC only machine, 7014 is a good choice, if a gap and crap is present, 6011 works good first, then 7014, or DC 7018.

Point taken. I will discuss with my neighbour, hope to get this fixed this weekend as I am behind on my projects :)
Am amassing equipment to do my own welding but there is nothing like doing it as they say. I have a Canox 225 Sparkler that I picked up at auction, helmet and some rods so far. Looking to get lessons from the neighbour, he's a great asset! Going to take the loader off and check the alignment of the mounts as I suspect the previous owner rolled the tractor. Thanks again for your advice, much appreciated. Great forum

That loader repair is an excellent reason for carbon arc gouging, and or plasma. I've done a lot of gouging and a little plasma and both will shave off that old weld right down to bare steel without going through the base metal, cutting torch will to but one has to be good and accurate, one wrong move with a cutting torch.........

skipjack I'm just a hobby welder myself:eek::eek:. I think you will want the repaired weld to look something like this weld.

Weld it right and skip the strengthening add-ons if you ever want to sell it. My two cents. Jim

While I TOTALLY agree with this I must admit that I have been guilty of "add-ons".
