Welder Choices

/ Welder Choices #21
I looked at the Miller DVI, and since I had no desire to load the machine in my pickup and take it on the road so to speak, I chose to get the Miller 210. The Miller dealer gave me other good reasons to get the 210 over the DVI; but for the life of me I don't recall what they all were.

I do think his advice saved me money, which I spent on a dual tank running gear in anticipation of getting a spool gun for aluminum, a canvas cover, a Jackson NexGen auto darkening helmet, which I recommend highly, and a couple of other doodads.

The helmet I bought has the digital controls inside, and dummy here found out the other day that Jackson built in a fail safe mode for welding newbies like me.

I had my stuff all set up, and was ready to weld. I put the helmet on and it seemed a bit dark; but I didn't think much of it. I did a couple of welds and noticed the helmet didn't get as dark as I remembered from when I got the welder. Well, dummy here forgot to turn the helmet on. I had some residual bright flashes like looking at a bright light bulb or camera flash; but they went away. I'm guessing the helmet defaults to a Shade 5 gas welding setting. I also wonder if my transitions prescription safety glasses darkened a bit too? Turning the helmet on solved the problem. As Homer Simpson would say, "DOH!"

The Jackson helmet is pricey; but in my opinion, well worth the expense.
