I have two cylinders at work that are no longer needed - would like to use them for a loader, but they do not have mounts on the end of the body, only the side like they were mounted flat to a plate. Can i remove the guts (piston rods etc) and weld on a cross tube to the bottom of the cylinder?

thanks

Yes you can. Or, you could probably get by just extending the rod out to get the piston seals away from the heat and weld it that way. Wrapping wet rags around the tube will help draw the heat away too.

Great! Thanks for the response! I thought that was the case but wanted to make sure.

But also you need to be carful you don't get it to hot and warp/distort the cylinder tube.

You might try this little trick. Remove the piston assembly. Plug the base end port, and fill the tube with water. Then sit the base end, vertical on the cross tube or whatever, and weld . The water will absorb the heat.
