Most backhoe, bulldozer and tractors buckets have weld lines on them. Some are nice and evenly spaced, some are just eratic patterns. Being a welder myself, I know that these weld lines take some time to do. Just what do they do that for? Thanks, Frank

Do a search on "hard facing" or "hard face welding"

You don't need to hard face the entire side or area of a bucket you want to be wear resistant. Some welding rods will recommend a cross hatch pattern. some folks just do helter skelter. Those beads are for keeping your bucket from wearing through or getting thin.

THe cross hatch will trap the materthats abrasive and hold it so the material its cutting is abraiding against it. Some is a built up dot pattern thats more for rock I think. Also a erring bone pattern is popular. Back in 2003 when the company i work for folded I went to welding for a sand pit. I had to weld up the buckets from the loader and excavator with the cross hatch. Talk about forever and a day of welding and then going over it again. One 5 yard bucket had over 250 pounds of rod built on it.

Two subjects I've seen more knock down drag out fights over, is patterns for hard facing, and what angle to weld teeth on augers!

Could be some shops have "quality" standards and others just want the job done and not particularly interested in the prettiness.
