I’m in Law Enforcement in CA. I am a Deputy Sheriff, not CHP, but I do work closely with the CHP. I have asked several of them and everyone will give you a different answer. Each CHP officer and the DMV seem to interpret the code differently. The only CHP who would likely know for sure would be the commercial units (the ones usually in pickups). I drive a dually flatbed and have never stopped at a scale, nor have I ever been stopped for not. The point of this is “who knows” even the so called “experts” don’t.
